Hello, I am having a problem with the powertrol on my 40s. My model has a single cylinder system.
The problem is that the lift is totally dead. It will not even attempt to lift the arms. The fluid level is good. To date here is what I have done:
1) Took of the pump and it looks good
2) With the tractor running, I have removed the 1/2 pipe plug on top of the powertrol, next to filler cap where preasure line comes in. Moving the powertrol lever foward(towards front of tractor) fluid will come out of the hole.
I have loosned the preasure side while running, and fluid is moving through the system.
At this point I do not know what else to check. I have the IT manuel, but it is pretty vague on the powertrol unit. Any ideas?

The pump drive can be sheared and still pump
enough oil to make you think it"s working, but
won"t pump under load.

Ok, I will take the pump off again, and this time take it apart and see if the keyway on the gear is sheared. When I took the pump off before, I checked the drive which it engaes into, which is screwed onto the fron of the camshaft, and it was all there and looked good. I will let you know what I find.

What a mystery. I would next check and make sure the lift lever and the shaft that it attaches to that goes into the touch o matic are still lashed together with no slippage.

Does everything still feel the same when you move the lift lever up and down.

I am about ready to go back to my corner.

Hopefully Wayne in TN will come up with the majic wand.

If you don't mind add a little history. Did the hyd work for years and one day just quit?

What were the symptoms before it quit?

It may help and may not.

The powertrol was working fine. I had small 4ft brush hog on it, and all was working great, then when I went to lift it, NOTHING. No noise, no bangs just NOTHING. Ithout that it had run out of fluid, but this was not the case. Also I changed the fluid and the old stuff that came out was fine. Clear clean, hated to get rid of it.

i know this might be an obvious problem, but did the linkage from the toplink to the quadrant lever come off? it's the one that performs the load-leveling function. it's a small linkage that runs from an arm on the right side of the toplink mount to the shaft going into the powertrol unit under the seat on the right side. it's worth checking as it would be an easy fix.

Jkohanski, You said you loosened the pressure line and fluid is moving through the system. As Ray said, your pump may not be working correctly. This is the first thing to eleminate. The manual says to check pump pressure with a gague, but most folks don"t have a 2000lb. gague laying around. So, with the tractor running at above idle, loosen the SMALL line at the front of the lift housing, it should squrit a stream of oil across the rear tire, if the pump is working corectly. I strongly reccomend using the 10w or 20w or even 30w Non-Detergent motor oil in the system. That is what is was designed to use. If you find that you have good pump pressure, post back and we can go from there.
