I was getting my Golf Cart ready to take to a JD show so its still JD related right?? Any Yamaha Golf Cart electricians out there?? heres a copy of my question;

Im unsure what I broke?? I have around a 95?? G14 Yamaha Gas Golf Cart 12 volt. It ran fine so today I added some lights wired from the hot + battery lug on the big main solenoid for hot and frame ground for return, and they worked fine. Then later I went to start the cart and it would not crank over,,,,, ,,,the lights would not work DESPITE HOT 12 VOLTS on them (used a test lamp). Its like theres no frame ground so they dont glow. The reverse warning horn is real faint like its low voltage or poorly grounded. The batery is fine and with a charger attached theres no change. When I jump the big main posts on the solenoid, the starter motor/generator runs the engine at normal speed, but she dont start the engine. A test lamp on either lil solenoid terminal glows when the key is on and the pedal depressed (as you expect it should to crank the starter/generator) and if youre in reverse where the horn sounds (but weak) it is loud like normal if a test lamp (other lead grounded) is touched to either of the lil solenoid activation terminals. They BOTH light a test lamp when pedal depressed. The battery ground is not attached to frame, it goes to one of the big four posts on the starter/generator. It seems like theres no ground or a resistive ground and she wont crank (unless you jump the main solenoid big posts) and the new lights will not glow via frame ground return even though they did for a while. Im afraid my light wiring burned something up ?? and its like the frame ground is non existent, but she cranks fine if the solenoid is jumped, its just that the lil solenoid activation terminals arent kicking it in or theres no or a weak ground and again, the reverse warning horn is real weak. Any ideas? I fear the light current from hot to ground flowed through where it wasnt supposed to and maybe burned up one of the solid state regulators or controllers, but which one and where is it, I have no diagram. Thanks in advance n God Bless John T

John T:
I have a 90 or 91 yamaha cart that I wired up with lights about 3 years ago and in order to get the lights to work I ran a #10 wire from the neg side of the battery to the frame for a ground. I do blow a fuse once in a while but it is usually do to shorting out something that I was not supposed to do. I have halgon lights for head lights and the 6" oval lights for tail and stop. I put a switch off of a buick transmission on the under side of the floorboard and any time that I let of off the acelerator my brake lights come on. The only thing I have to watch is that I turn the key off when I stop and set for a while or it will run my battery down. Mine does have 2 fuses under the seat just behind the driver that are hard to get to and see if they are blown. But when 1 blows it generally will not run. Have never blown 1 do to ruff ground conditions. I have worker shows for 3 days and have only used $1.95 of high priced gas.

Thanks Dale, it did work (frame grounded lights) until I blew the 10 amp fuze on the ground side so that must be the fuze Yamaha intended as a frame ground path but to still protect against a shoted brush. I went ahead and ran a separate ground wire from the halogens direct to battery ground so they are covered and am only running those 2 lil 1157 dims via the Yamaha ground side fuze. I think the reason Yamaha used the fuze and the problem with a No 10 wire may be the brush ground problem, but I dont have a wirign diagram as of yet. I agree, I can run like days on end on a gal or 2 of gas. Our campers are farrrrr rrr from the show so its handy to haul parts n people around, theres several eldery folks at the show (including my 81 yo mother) who love to see but are unable to walk too far.

I dun fixed it, but wanted to let yall know in case you try n wire some lights to a Yamaha Floating ground golf cart. I read a bit on a Golf Cart Forum, not exactly same as my question but related enough to learn Yamaha later added a 10 amp fuse in the negative circuit (otherwise frames is NOT grounded) for protection against a shorted brush or something??? STILL, SHE WONT CRANK WITH THAT FUSE OUT?? My lights did work a while and that fuze was only 10 amps. Two lights are halogen truck fog lamps that draw considerable curent while the 2 rears are only the dim side of an 1157 bulb, but I bet that total exceed the 10 amp fuze cuz it was blown. (lights quit plus cart was dead) I looked earlier n thought it was intact but I lost my glasses n I cant see all that well up close grrrrr rrrr. Anywho, I just ran a dedicated ground wire from the front fog lights direct back to the battery neg so they work and DO NOT draw current via the Yamaha ground circuit fuze. Im still using frame ground on the 2 1157 rear dim bulbs that seem to draw current via the 10 amp Yamaha ground side fuze, so the only thing I gotta figure out is if that lamp draw is anything to worry about or is gonna ever harm or overheat or overcurrent any critical yamaha component. If I fear that I can run dedicated separate grounds to the rear lights, but its a lot more work and wire snaking and frame isolating than the fronts were grrrrr as they are stud/case to frame mount grounds while the fronts were isolated plastic mount.

Im camped at next weeks show at Elnora like 1/2 mile and I planned to drive the cart plus my tractors around so I didnt wanna be without the cart with lights.

God Bless yall n sorry for the rants n raves but I was gettign frustrtaed at all the breakdowns Ive had the last week and even sayin bad words grrrrr rrrrr rrr

I did some browsing on a Golf Cart Forum and read what I already noticed, the battery - isnt tied to frame ground, it goes to one of the 4 starter/gen posts. I read about a fuse in the - side to frame Yamaha added, maybe the lights worked for a while drawing return current somewhere somehow but that link opened. I only found one fuse, however, and its good, Im gonna go n look for more fuses or fuse linls to frame ground cuz the lights did work somehow for a while until somethign opened, and now she wont start or the lights work grrrrr rrrrr but since the starter/gen cranks fine if jumped, Im hoping I didnt fry anythign in it???
