3020 gas powershift or new 6403 ????

I have a 3020 gas, powershift, WF, dash controls (1964 model); its in nice shape. I see the new 6403 Mexican-American tractors and have dilusions of selling the 3020 and buying a new 6403. I use the tractor as a utility machine - loader, rear blade, brush hog, post hole digger, and some light plowing. Which machine do you all think is better suited for such work for the next 15 years????? ???? And Why???

Bubba.. if the 3020 was a Diesel id say keep it.. but a gas... at least it is a powershift..i"d prolly go with the newer one just because it will be much more efficient. And since gas is like buying gold...

I just got off the phone with a Deere dealer I do business with. I'm considering buying a new 5420 to replace an aging 2440 I have now. Lots to consider. First the 2440; I can work on just about the entire tractor. I've been through the engine. The tranny is very simple and straightforward. No problem there, should I need to tie into it. Hydraulics are very good, and very simple. I've kept it up in good shape. It's worth as much as ANY 2440 you're apt to find. IT'S PAID FOR! Now the 5420; Nothing like new. Dealer has to handle all repairs for a while, if any needed. Several tranny options, all "user friendly", but beyond my mechanical know-how, if there's major trouble. Lots of electronics. They make for a very easy to operate tractor, but once again, I can't repair most things that might go wrong. I can get an enclosed cab. NICE! If I buy one, I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! Not so nice... In all likelyhood, I'm buying it this month. Should have bought it in the spring, so it could have been used during hay season. Tie breaker(s), The cab, and being NEW! The 2440 will stay on as a "second" utility tractor. Next year, the same decision all over again. Time to deadline the 4955.....This one's going to cost many a bushel o' soybeans..... John

A local county just sold 2 used 5420 tractors on
sealed bids.They get new ones every couple years
on a state program.I bought one last spring,and
when I went to pick it up they had probably 10 model 2440 tractors in a back building.I asked why they were selling the new tractors,his reply
was Since we bought the 2440"S new they haven"t bought any repair parts other than,battery"s,
tires,and a few minor things from operator
abuse.The 5420"s both had journals about 20
pages long with all kind of electrical and
transmission repair.The one I bought had over
$1800 in repairs in 6 months.

I have heard other similar bad stuff about the 5000 series tractors, that is why I am interested in the 6000s as a utility machine. I just haven't heard much about them.

Thye 5000 series and early 5010 tractors should be avoided. Part way through the 5010 run production was stopped and some serious re-design work done. Still rather than chancing a 5020 series, many farmers are purchasing a low profile 6020 series instead. Or try to find an old 2355 or similar, some bidding wars going on them at sales.

You say loader work ? I would say that if you can afford it than go for it,buy a new one and get MFWD. I don't know about the new model sizes but any compareable model in a new tractor should be much faster and stronger and a diesel should run alot cheaper. You don't have to get rid of the old one the more tractors the better. I'd be willing to bet that old one gets passed by and a new one will get used more.

Think I'll just sit by and stay out of this debate. Perhapes other than saying in the year 2050 some middled aged fellows maybe looking some old antique 6403/6603's. And fix them up to have one like they drove as a kid in the good old days. And take the old girl to antique shows.

Do you really think that anything with that mutch plastics, electronics, and other tech gizmos on it will still be reunning in 50 years? I sincerely doubt that anything, car, truck, tractor or combine will be running much after even twenty year. The electronics will fail, and then, eventually, won't be available anymore and nothing else, that's newer will work either. In addition, plasitcs are really good for a lot of applications, BUT, they all, eventually age, and when they do they get brittle and break! Wanna bet that replacement parts, also plastic. are going to become hard to come by, after original repair part stocks are exhausted?

On the otherhand, in 2050, a 1964 John deere 3020G Powershift, Like the 1950 John Deere A and the 1933 John deere D, will in all likelyhood, provided that there will still be fuel available for it, still run!

I agree with buickanddeere Iam 35 yrs old now. I could care less about two cylinders or anything older. I am interested in the things from my youth. The stuff my dad saves and cherishes looks like junk to me. I wouldnt give a dollar for the whole shed full. It is mostly stuff that he connects to from his younger days.

Looks like we will have to wait until 2050 to find out. Remember the this generation of young folk have a deeper understanding of electricity and computers than most old farmers. As for plastic aging. I've seen lots of fenders and sheet metal dented beyond repair. Or turned back into mostly iron oxide with the odd fleck of paint here and there. In 2050 the people who purchased two cylinders and New Generation tractors new will be long dead. Even the next generation of kids who where around these tractors in thier prime will be gone. A few will be retired but without room to tinker and enough cashflow. The 40 to 65 year old collector in 2050 will be looking for items from thier youth. Won't much interest in the old junk before the year 2000.
