I'm looking for information on a johndeere 70 diesel. A later model that would have the 3 piece crankshaft. I'm looking for this particular tractor. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks Jim

Jim:

I'm not sure I understand your question. I have a 70 Diesel and have been in every nook and cranny it has, but have never seen a three piece crankshaft. There is a large counter weight mounted on the crank, and a removable clutch driver and flywheel, but the whole crank is one solid, forged piece. And it's heavy, too!

Am I misunderstanding your question?

Frank

Frank,

Yes I wrote it wrong sorry. The crank is one piece. I'm told that instead of having the counter weight on the outside that this particular 70 is similar to the 720/730. It has the counter weight in the center of the crank. So I take it has 3 main bearings instead of 2. Is this any clarification. I'm looking for one of these crankcase/transmission housings.

Jim:

As far as I know, the '70' Diesel only had the internal counterweight and all had a center main.

Accordingly to the parts book, there was only one main case used, the part number F 1800 R, which was orderd as assembly AF 1975 R.

Hope this helps!

Frank

Frank,

I thought only the last year had the center main. Well thanks this helps a lot. Do you know where I could find a 70 Diesel reasonable?

Jim:

Nope, they all had center mains. The "R" did not have a center main.

They are indeed around, either in whole or parts. I have had good luck advertising in the classified section on this site. Just look up and to the left under classifieds. the ad is free.

BTW, if you're going to undertake a main case exchange, I suggest you look for a parts and service manual for the '70'D, because you're going to have just about everything but the power steering and final drive apart. They're still available from Deere. You can even order them by phone at 800-522-7448.

Parts book is PC445 and the service is SM2017.

I like '70'D's myself.
