To all the John Deere guru's out there. Can anyone tell me wether the 70 diesel and the G transmission are the same. I was told the gears and shafts would interchange. Any information would appreciated.

Jim

I would have to agree with Frank. The "G" and "70" main cases are substantially different, be they diesel or spark-ignition. The "70" spark tractors moved the starter to the bottom of the main case, as on the "50" and "60". I've heard that the "70" reduction gears can be swapped into a "G". I went ahead and checked the parts book quick, and the countershafts and sliding gear shafts are different, and in fact, there was a change in the sliding gear shaft withing "70" production. I'm betting that just about every major internal component will be different, unless some of the gears stayed the same. Only a parts book will tell you for sure.

Jim:

I just looked very quickly, but I don't think they are even close! To tell for sure, you need to spend some quality time with the two parts books: PCo445 for the 70D, and PC 369 for the "G".

None of the shafts or major gears share part numbers.

Are you looking for transmission gears, or a main case, or both? I'd think for as many 70D engines that bit the dust you could find a loaded main case where you wouldn't have to swap anything, just spruce it up.

BTW, the '70' Gas does not look the same either.

Frank

Jim,

To my knowledge the only difference between the 70 D and a G transmission would be in the first reduction gear and the associated clutch gear and oil slinger gear. The 70D runs at a higher RPM and JD used these gears to slow down the tractor in order maintain the same ground speed. The are 87% of the 70gas/G.

Thanks guys I was just checking. Someone had told me they were similar and I could swap parts. I'm getting ready to build a new pulling tractor and wanted to weigh all the options.

Jim,

I've got to appologize. I completely misread your request. However, it looks like you did get some really good advice, otherwise.
