Started on this project about 3 weeks ago. Was just going to change what was necessary including all the discs. First problem was the disc drive. Try as I might I could not get it loose. Used every idea imagineable including lots of heat. Finally as a very last resort I cut it off very carefully with a cutting torch and purchased a new one from JD. Every thing looked good at this point. The new disc drive and all the new discs went together as they should. At this point I felt pretty good. I attempted to adjust the three operating bolts and this too looked OK. I put on a new brake pad. When I started the tractor I could not stop the belt pulley nor could I shift gears with the tractor running. I now have the whole works including the pulley, drive gear and the operating sleeve etc. off the tractor and in the shop. Am having trouble separating the operating sleeve from the drive gear. I apologize for this lengthy post but as you all can see --I'm in way over my ears so any help will certainly be appreciated. Thanks and God Bless. JM

Got it fixed and certainly want to thank Dan and Goodwrench for their info.. My problem other than replacing the drive disc and other discs was really simple. I put everything together "wrong" not once but twice. When everything was stacked correctly it worked like a charm and of course I am very thankful. It is often time hard to see a problem when you are standing on it. Thanks and God bless. J

It sounds like your driving disc is either on the crank too deep (worn crank splines or mis-machined replacement) or the drive gear on operating sleeve has walked off the sleeve. Given you can't remove the drive gear, I'd assume the former. You can test this hypothesis by doing the following:

1) Reinstall Pulley on crank, making note of the drive gear's alighnment with the 1st reduction gear. They should be in constant mesh, close to perfectly aligned. Reinstall actuating fork, making note of any travel in pulley (in or out) when bolts are tightened. If the pulley is forced to move inboard outboard significantly (assuming operating sleeve is free) there could be an issue in the fork mechanism. Do not connect linkage.

2) If #1 checks OK, install the 1st fiber disc and re-install driving disc & torque appropriately. If pulley refuses to move independent from the crankshaft (ie will not spin on its own, or appears to have significant 'drag', your driving disc is likely too far onto the crankshaft. Typically, there will be a 1/8 inch of excess hub extending beyond the crankshaft when seated appropriately. If it is flush, you have a problem in this area. Then, check the crank for excessive wear & test another driving disc, if possible. The new one could be mis-machined, or the crank simply too worn to accomodate it.

Joe, I had to rebuild my clutch on my 70 D this summer. I could not get the drive gear off although I did try. As a last resort I decided to take it to my local John Deere dealer before I broke something. They removed the drive gear and installed new tensioning bolts($35). This tractor had been setting for many years and the clutch was froze (choked with rust). I installed new fiber discs and put it back together, works great. Maybe I just got off lucky.
