I have a John Deere 60 with clutch problems I am hoping someone can help me with. The clutch doesnt want to stay engaged. This started a couple days ago while pulling logs for firewood. It has now gotten to the point that the tractor doesnt want to go even when I hold the lever forward. Please tell me what I need to replace or fix, as this is our only tractor at this time. Our MF 165 is in need of repair as well. Thanks so much!!!

All it would take is for one nut to back off like if the cotter pin wasn"t holding it. I would push the lever forward/engaged/ then tighten each nut to the same tightness a beam type torque wrench works good for this if you really want them close, around 10 to 15 ft lb will usually do it. If you just move them the same amount of notches you don"t know if it was right before or if only one backed off.

Did your clutch have the "snap" feel to it before it quit pulling? Mine did not when it started acting like yours. I found one of my operating bolts froze in the pully and it was preventing one of the dogs fom moving. I would try adjusting it first as the other guy said, then if that does not work, pull the drive disk, clutch fork and pully to have a look around.

Remove the clutch pulley cover and tighten each of the three castellated nuts one castellation.Replace the cotter pins with new ones. You may also need to tighten the pulley brake so it engages the pullel when the lever is pulled to the extreme rear of its travel. This is normal maintenance for thlose tractors. In really extreme cases you may have to go two castellations, but I doubt it in your case.
