50 Brake Noise

When I step on the left brake on my 50 it makes a rather loud noise, something like gear teeth stripping. It usually only does this the first time I use it or it will do it again after I have drove it for awhile. I have the brake off now and was expecting to find some kind of damage or wear but everything basically looks fine except for the fact the linings and inside are grease or oil soaked. I thinking it must be soething in the rear end? Has anyone ever had this before?

Jeff,

My 50 had the same noise. Turned out the brake shoes were worn in places. They both had cracked shoe linings. Basically I cleaned everything up and installed new shoes. Brakes work great now. I too had a bunch of oil/grease on the linings. I did not address the oil problem although I probably should have. I can't say for sure that the oil was not being forced out because the transmission was filling up with Powr-Trol oil. I do know that I had lots of oil leaking out of various places until I replaced all the seals in the rockshaft and PTO. If I get oiled/greased up brakes shoes again I'll have to replace the oil seals on the brake spindles and do the shoes again.

Best of luck,
John

I have a "520" that just started oiling the left brake... Is there an oil seal that can be replaced in there..?? That left brakedrum on my 520 won't come off, unless I take the whole assembly out...

Thanks..! Ron.

Yes. It is on the "outside" end. There's an inner bushing, then an outer bushing, then an oil seal. THe seal number is AF 2788 R.

Well, it's supposed to come off. You might have to remove the whole assemble to free it OR loosen the drum nut a few turns and take it out and used it a bit. It might come loose.

Even with the stud out of the axle housing, the drum will not clear the brakeshoes, and inner "lip", near the splines..!! I guess some of these are like that..!! Thanks for the part #..!! Ron..

Jeff:

While the grease and oil can make the brakes "grabby", you should look for a more serious underlying cause of the oil getting there in the first place. If the inner bushing is worn egg-shaped, oil will pour into the brake assembly. What's worse, the inner end with the brake pinion gear can wobble, and cuase the pinion to walk up the bull gear until the pinion can break, with bits of it falling into the bull gear teeth. I had a main case failure on our original '48 "A" for this very thing.

Just wanted you to know that this is possibility.

the oil and grease are making them grab this can be hard on the gears inside and break them.
