Just trailed home a probably a model 953 wagon chassis. Can't read any obvious numbers but has the letters "JD" blended together and cast into the bearing caps. 16" dia rims about 5" wide and the cast hubs have "ribs". Any ideas when the 953 & 943 wagons were built, any particulars and their capacity? Planning on using it to roll the 4000lb gas turbine generator around on.

Pulled my original manual for my 963. I also went back into the archives. A number of hits. the 943 was a little weight gear. 953 standard, and 963 rated heavy duty. I have 2 963's, both with rocking bolsters. My uncle has 3 953's, 2 with rocking and 1 with fixed bolster. 963 was rated at a 5 ton gear (10,000 lbs.) I included a link to the 963. I don't know the exact specs for the 953, but I'm guessing somewhere around a 4 ton gear. We used all 5 for the same purpose and never had a problem with any of them. I can get a copy of a 953 manual if you need it. I've opened my e-mail. If you need more info, I'd be more than happy to provide it. Loren-MN

Loren

I tried to e-mail form home on my kid's standby computer but it doesn't seem to send. My regular computer is in the process of a lighting strike insurance case. I would be pleased to get a copy of the manual until my hard copy shows up. Thanks

YEP coil spring helpers, it took 4 of them, 1 on each side of bolster, I remember when pa got them, then used wagon for silage hauling,, later pa bought a JD chuck wagon, it had the helpers already on it,,,,billyiron

The 953, 963 wagons were the best wagons ever built, bar none, although there were wagons of higher capacity. The 4000 lb is not going to be a problem. You might want to jack up each wheel and see that each spins freely without excess endplay.

I dont know the rated capacity on the gear, but we have a 1000 gallon fuel tank on one so what ever diesel weighs X 1000 gal we are hauling with it, we do have the extra coil spring helpers too, but no hub problems,,,billyiron

I'd guess about 8+ lbs/gal without looking it up.

963 models had leaf springs.

If I recall correctly, leaf springs were options on both the 953 and 963.

Check the picture above. Those were the 3 versions of the 963. Fixed bolster, rocking bolster, and the leaf spring option.

Just brought it home from a farm sale, the post office isn't that fast getting the manual here. Do have a 963 book kicking around from the mid 1960's from Father's hoist/dump wagon model 150 hoist. To my suprise the DB1312 dual CD parts list makes no mention of wagons, only trailers. Never seen a wagon with spring bolsters of any kind around here. Just bounce your filling loose on tire cushioning alone on a hay rack. Still has two of the origional lightweight 16" rims which tend to split and two replacement 15" rims. I was wondering what the bearing/hub load capacity is? As the generator with have to share the wagon with a 500 imperial gallon kerosene tank. That will give 15 hrs run time at full load. The hydraulic brake option would be interesting to see. Wonder what Ford or GM parts they grafted on there?

Some of them had leaf spring bolsters. I've got a manual at home on those wagon gear. I'll hunt for it when I get there in about 3-1/2 hours. If no one has posted your needed info, I'll look it up, and pass it on. John
