Have a 44 B that was knocking. Found #1 rod had lost most of babbet material and deposited it on crank. Have spare rod. any suggestions for getting babbet material off crank without taking it out. If journal is bad will disassemble but it run's great and don't want to do more than necessary. I understand that I cannot just replace rod without taking off head, as piston will not go back into cylinder from rear??? Thanx John Sard

John, If babbitt is stuck to the journal it failed to get oil. You need to find that problem. Straight Muratic acid will remove the babbitt. But polish it with 320 paper and oil good or it will quickly rust. Be carefull with the acid.Earl in Illinois
