I bought this 720 and it has a PTO noise...I have a need to use my pto for 2 hours of work, and need to know if I could use my pto with this problem....JUST to do the 2 hours of pto work.

Pto makes a whining noise, very loud! It makes this noise anytime the knob on the floorboard is turned on....it makes this noise regardless if the pto is engaged or dis-engaged with the foot pedal....this sounds like a bearing is out, but I have no idea of where to begin....anybody know what bearing this might be? How far up into the rear-end is this bearing?

Due to the very high noise level, makes me think that it must have been used by the previous owner for some time after the noise first appeared....
SO, does anyone think I could use this for 2 hours of pto work....

2 minutes,2 hours,2 days ? Who knows. How lucky do you feel ? It could be just bearings now but could end up busting the trans. case sometime or not ?

Joe:

It would only be guessing, and I won't so that to you.

The pto action starts with the pto cross shaft getting engaged with the pto shifter fork. #1

This engages a slider gear to the crankshaft driven "live" powershaft gear.

There are cone-tapered baerings in a quill that carry this shaft. #2

This would be the first opportunity for your squeal.

The tailshaft heads rearward to the pto clutch assembly. #3

These bearings will turn if the pto is engaged, so they could be the second source of your squeal.

Since you say the squeal takes place even without the rear clutch engaged, I"d say you have these four bearings to resolve. The repair could be very extensive as you can see from the illustration.

Joe, I sure don't know the answer to what is wrong but I would sure try to get a friend to do the work. Your 10.00 bearing might turn into a 300.00 shaft or gear.
