My 50 does not keep the batteries charged, once I shut it off about a day later I got nothing. When I try to start it the starter pedal goes all the way down and does nothing. I can jump start it from pickup to batteries. So now I started unhooking the batteries after every use, but I want to fix it right. This summer I got a new distributer cap and solenoid. The batteries are maybe a year old. lights work good all the time, even after sitting for weeks with batteries hooked up.

Thanks if anyone can help

Wow Jim, good question, but its a lil wide open for now at least. I can help you here or by e mail or your phone calling me, but we need to get the problem narrowed down a bit to save us both time in the future. I will appreciate your help in answering my questions below which will help us both in future diagnostics. Then if its a charging problem I will tell you how to diagnose that or whatever other problem the questions below lead us to.

1) You say it wont keep the batteries charged, but is it charging now okay when running and they get discharged while setting???

2) When running, does the ammeter show charge or discharge or never move?????

3) When sititgn and running, if you turn on the lights or ignition does the ammeter move?? Which way????

4) So long as you unhook the batteries, do they remain charged okay????? ?

5) When you shut the tractor off, does the ammeter swing over to discharge????? ??? or move at all???? or go to middle????

What we need to figure out Jim is if theres a discharge problem when setting (which unhooking prevents) and if so and the ammeter swings over to discharge when you shut the tracor off, YOU MAY SIMPLY HAVE STICKING CUT OUT RELAY CONTACTS IN THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR. However, if thats not the problem but it stills discharges when setting, there may be another bleed/discharge problem.

If they stil run down when setting even if totally disconencted, you have a battery problem, maybe a bad cell??? Is there electrolyte above the plates in all cellw????? ?
Is there any gray or milky appearance in any cells????

But, if its NOT discharging while setting, you may have a gen or VR problem, in which case I can help you diagnose that.

Let me know answers to the above Jim, especially if the ammeter swings to discharge when you shut her off,,,,, , and if unhooking the batteries causes them to not discharge,,,,, ,, and if she shows charge when running and I will do my best to help you out.

Post back or e mail jmn50@msn,com or feel free to call me at (812) 824-4608 with any questions.

Good luck n God Bless ya Jim

Jim, the information you furnished is a little conflicting so I believe we need a little more clarification on your problem to give you specific directions on repair.. I can give you a complicated long list of electrical things to check but that will get complicated & confusing to cover every conceivable problem you COULD HAVE.. If you help with a little better explanation we can pin your problem down pretty darn close & give you some simple to do right to the point tests.. ~You say..."my 50 does not keep the batteries charged"...>>> Ok, that says the charging system isn't operating..

~You also say..."I can jump start it from pickup to batteries"...>>> That says the batteries are dead & agrees with the above.

~But you also say..."So now I started unhooking the batteries after every use"...>>> If that allows the tractor to start that says the batteries are being charged & something in the tractor's electrical system is running the batteries down.

~Then you say..."lights work good all the time, even after sitting for weeks with batteries hooked up"..."That says there isn't a battery drain with the batteries hooked up"..

..... .....We need to know..... .....

1)- Will the tractor start after a few days or weeks IF you disconnect the batteries?

2)- Does the ammeter show a charge while running [or do the lights get brighter as the engine is revved up]?

3)- Does the ammeter show a discharge with the lights turned on [tractor not running]?

4)- If after you jump start it will it start by itself the rest of the day?

~Just give us a little more detail & we will point you right at your problem...
