PUMP KIT COSTS ABT $30. FIND SOMEONE TO PUT IT IN$250. COULD NEED SOME ADITIONAL PARTS BUT MOST OF THE TIME A PUMP KIT DOES IT. FOR BEST RESULTS TAKE YOUR PUMP TO A DIESEL SHOP. DON

4020s (also 2520s and 3020s) came with two totally different injection pumps. The one you seem to be referring to is the DB series, but many 4020s also came with CB series pumps. Very few parts are available for the CB pumps and Deere treated them as obosolete back in the early 80s. Deere then offered change-over kits to replace the CBs with the DB style pumps, said kits including all new lines and several other pieces. So, if the 4020 has a CB pump (and there are still many around, I have two), changing over gets a little complicated. As to the DB pump, the $30 kit comes with seals, o-rings, governor weight retaining ring, and a new style fuel pressure regulator plug. The old style rubber regulator fails just as often as the plastic weight retainer does - and when it does the fuel timing advance will not work properly. Also, most pumps with high hours on them will, at the least, need new drive-end bronze bushings, fuel pump vanes and liner, and often a new metering valve.

THE "CB" PUMP WAS USED ON 1969-1970 4020'S AND 4520'S AND SOME OTHER MODELS. THEY WERE NO GOOD,LEAKERS AND GOVERNER PROBLEMS. IF THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE THROW IT AWAY. DON

Those CB pumps often got a bad rap, but . . . I know quite a few that have never been apart and work fine. My neighbor has two 4020s and one 2520, all of which he bought new. The two tractors that have CB pumps still run fine, an both tractors have over 30,000 hours on them - and the pumps have never been touched. The tractor that has the DB pump has close to 40,000 hours and I've rebuilt the engine three times and the injection pump twice. He also has a Deere 350 crawler with a CB pump and that pumps works fine and has never been apart since new. So I disagree - some of those CB or sometimes called "pancake" pumps are pretty darned good. As far as them having bad govenors - I don't believe it. They are prone to throttle-gear wear since the throttle operates with a rack and pinion gear setup - which in-turn is hooked to the internal governor. Those gears can be changed in 10 minutes from the outside of the pump without removing it which is no big deal as long as you can get the parts. I used to carry a couple of extra sets in my toolbox when I was a Deere mechanic. As far as the CB govenor itself - I've never seen a bad one. Not much to go wrong with it which cannot be said for the DB or JDB pumps with the plastic weight retainer.

Have to agree with jdmaris. The main problem back in those days was with the 3 point sensing when plowing. It gave the impression that the tractor govenor having a problem when it was the 3 pt. that was at fault. Some of the early 69 models had poppet pins in the 3pt.sensing vales that were too long.Actually,I found the answer to the problem on a 1969 4020 gasser.I came up with a way to determine how much to grind off the pins, but Deere said to just replace them.
And I'll admit, I took more of those CB pumps apart and never did find anything wrong with any of them The really nice feature with the CB pump was the govenor was much more responsive that any DB that was ever built.Part was from the design of the govenor itself and part was from the Italian Triangle Outlet metering valve. It increased the fuel delivery expotentially as the need arose. The only CB pump (and the customer)that ever drove me up the wall was one that the air separator bleed hole was plugged up.I left the diesel room and went home for the day, leaving the customer standing.(No we didn't lose the customer-just one of those guys who could get under your skin real quick)
