I have just converted my JD distributor to a Delco. I was going to replace the cap but the ones I find for sale don't look like the original. They basicly look like a 4 cyl distributor cap with two of the holes plugged.

I went to John Deere and they wanted $47.00 for a cap. I figure for that kind of money, I can clean the one I have.

Here's my question. Do they make an aftermarket distributor cap that looks like the original? Does the $47.00 John Deere cap look like the original?

I have never really tried to clean up an old cap before. I was planning to get a piece of fine emory paper and go over the metal contacts until they were shinny. Is there any reason why that won't bring the old cap back to new? It isn't cracked or anything.

Thanks,

David

Thank's for all of your imput. I have taken a good look at my cap and I'm pretty sure a new one will be required.

I'm going to take the plunge and pay the JD people what they ask.

Thanks,

David

JD part 1913739 is a cap that has 3 wires going out the side like on a 70 for $40.75 . Step up and get it,I did and it sure looks good.

The only other reason it may not work is if it has a carbon track, which can be hard to see and sometimes they are hidden or burned through to another post. This should show up as a miss or crossfire. If your old cap runs fine use it. You can make it look good by spraying some clear spray paint on it.

Cleaning the cap with any abrasive or solvent could lead to problems. The carbon trace that was mentioned is a real problem. I had this problem with a Ford Flathead this summer. Turned out to be a rotor that had been cleaned and the solvent changed the characteristics of the plastic and it burned a trace to ground. If you must clean it, use a dialectic solvent or possibly WD-40.
