I have an opportunity to buy a junked-out JD 50 with a live PTO. I was thinking of buying it in order to put the live PTO on my tractor.

Has anyone ever tried that? Can it be done within a reasonable amount of man hours?

Thanks

David

I think Mike has the ticket, a parts book is a must on this and is a great thing to have anyway. Do you have a PTO at all on yours? If you sit with the parts book, or prints from a parts CD, you will be able to figure out what you need easily and possibly additional gaskets, bearings etc.

I had a 50 once without live pto, these should be very rare but more than likely not worth as much. I would think that if you had the whole other tractor for parts you should end up with every part needed to change it over. A parts book would be a must to have at hand to check what is needed. You are going to have to go into it pretty far, reduction cover off, trans. gears may have to come all the way out if the bevel gear shafts are differant and in the process you may find some bad bearings and need some seals gaskets and other new parts. If you like tinkering it will keep you busy this winter.

I have done this on a model 50 and model 60. It takes about a day to do this process. Essentially you have to drain all the rockshaft oil, transmission oil and swap the rockshaft and pto assembly from one tractor to the other.

Don't all 50's have live power? Both of mine do.

Live pto was optional as was power steering when introcued in April 1954. Hydraulics were always live if equiped with them. Many farmers of that era were raised in the depression and didn't see the need for fancy, wimpy or high priced options.
