I have been looking through the classified ads and have found several people selling serial # tags.

This really doesn't seem like a good practice to me. You can't sell one for a car. I guess they are legal for tractors.

It would seem to me that this would make it easy for folks to change the idenity of a stolen tractor.

Not to mention, these serial numbers have a bit of history attached to them. You give that to John Deere, they can tell you about your tractor. If you change-out the tags, you are really doing history a dis-service.

I know this is an open site but I feel like selling these tags over the internet is bad news.

I just thought I'd put my two cents in.

It's just like guns or booze. It's not the fact that they're sold that's bad, it's what unscrupulous buyer does with them!

I have seen collections of tags, and, providing these were not chopped off of someone's tractor and stolen I think that's a neat idea compared to leaving them on a tractor that's sent for scrap.

Hey guys, let me know what you think about this. I have a 1941 AO. The tag is gone. I don't know the serial number. I've thought about buying a reproduction tag. I think it would look better with one on it, even if it is not original. I'm not going to make up a fictious number and put on it. I thought about leaving it blank, but maybe a future owner would stamp a number on it. I thought I would have the tag stamped "1941 AO". What do you think?

Yeah, that sounds good. Where do you get repro. blank tags? You might add your name, date of restoration and on the bottom "NO Ser.No". Fifty years from now some guy would find the information helpful.

It just makes it all the more important to have the Two Cylinder Club trace the serial number before purchasing. You never know what some tractor jockey, forger or thief has pieced together from a pile of parts.

I just looked on ebay and found one for a 49 AR. This was a topic awhile back on another board. At that time there were 7 or 8 on ebay. Suprisingly there were not as many people who thought it was wrong as one might think
