I have recently acquired A Model G Popping Johnny from my Father-in-law. He replaced the Clutch disk and it still has a problem of slipping. I pulled clutch disk out and inspected did not look that bad. Tried adjusting springs but that looks like it only releases clutch. Is their something deeper inside that puts more pressure on the plates to engage it more? It seams to help if I pull back on lever while slipping but I can not put enough pressure to completely stop it from slipping. Has anyone ran into this before?

John, what clutch do you have on that G?.. If you have the early cam operated clutch it works a little differently..[still adjusts the same]

~In any case you will need to try tightening the 3 adjustment nuts 1 flat each at a time & try it.. Keep tightening those nuts a little at time until it will still snap into engagement & release but takes a pretty good tug or push on the clutch lever to do so.. If you get to the point that you can't snap it in or out, back those nuts up slightly until you can.. Try not to turn one nut more than the other [ALWAYS DO ALL 3 THE SAME]..

~If that stops the slipping you are good to go, if it doesn't post back or E-Mail & tell us what year G & what clutch you have.. There is a whole list of things that could be wrong but that depends on the clutch style & whether or not the adjustment helps.. In most cases adjusting those 3 nuts a little tighter will stop the slipping..

Clooney, having trouble with the clutch on a G as well. This is a late styled G. Have checked the endplay of the flywheel and it set by the book, have all new disc in the clutch and the one behind the driver. The driver sticks out past the end of the crankshaft just about an 1/8 inch, so that the big washer and bolt push it tight against the crankshaft....not up against it but close. I have to tighten the nuts way in even such that they are past the cotter key holes before it starts to snap. It actually snaps better pulling it back than engaging it. I have checked and rechecked and everything looks normal, and I have adjusted many of these before, but this just doesnt feel right. Any ideas?? Thanks

I've been known to put my foot in my mouth before so will venture a guess. When I rebuilt my late G I had trouble with the clutch as you describe. On further study I found that the clutch operating shaft with the yolk and pulley brake had broken where the shaft goes thru the collar on the cast part. When you pulled back on lever to apply pulley brake it allowed the collar to spread and the clutch would not stop turning and would not snap into place no matter how you adjusted. I replaced that shaft and bracket with brake and now works fine.

Hi Gpower. Hard to know without seeing it, but that sounds like your dawgs and toggles are needing replaced. I've run into that on a couple tractors. Another possibilty is the pin and sleeve that keep everything in alignment is getting worn and needing repaired. Any of those can cause poor clutch performance. Best of luck to ya! Don

I have adjusted the nuts from all the way out to as tight as I thought I could without breaking something. The lever stills moves all the way front to back. The snap is weak at best it only feels as thought the level operates at the last few inches of travel. With the nuts all the way out I get no movement and with the nuts all the way in the drum stops moving but the lever has no problem moving both ways? I tried removing the housing with the four bolts off were the shaft connected to the lever and internals but could not get it to release inside? I think I pull the cast housing were the clutch drum mounts off and look at the internals!
