Slow hydraulics on a 1976 JD 2040

I have my father's 2040 with the small hydraulic pump and on cold days the three point will not lift. I can get it to work sometimes by cycling it down, and then raising it, but this isn't always safe. Any suggestions? What is needed to upgrade to a larger pump? Thanks in advance, - JMH

I had the same problem a few years ago with my 2630. I sent it to the JD shop for a clutch change and mentioned that I had slow response to my three point hitch. I sometimes would have to move the external cylinder control lever to obtain a response. Turned out to be a bad control valve body. Cost about $400 to replace.

Does the pump provide adequate pressure on warm days? If so, going to a larger pump will get you nothing but more volume I would think. Your pump should work better cold than hot if it's worn too as the higher viscosity oil would compress easier (wouldn't leak out the worn parts as fast).

Sounds like the viscosity of your fluid is too high for the ambient temp. Thinner fluid would be the order of the day.

You could check the fluid maybe by taking a sample and a sample of the correct fluid for your hydraulics/tranny/ diff/ steering and get a paint viscosity checker from your paint store.

Maybe you could get the fluid real cold (to get a better reading) and put it thru the strainer. Should answer your question.

Orrrrr rr your hyd filter may be clogged and the colder, higher vis fluid makes it harder to get to the pump.

I recall that the 40XX series has 2 systems, a 2500 and 150# system. One is for working, the second for cooling and filtering. Would have to look to see how they interact considering higher viscosity fluid.

Does your tractor have a front mounted pump? If so, does it rattle like crazy when first started on cold mornings? Does your power steering work ok when you first start up?

Thank you Mark, yes the pump is mounted up front by the radiator. I've never been close enough to it to notice it rattle but now that you mention it I do remember some chatter through the steering wheel while I was trying the lever. I was having trouble with it yesterday while the air temperature was probably in the 40s. I would raise the lever and absolutely nothing would happen. I had to lower the lever completely and after a second or so the pump would charge the system and the 3-point would raise with the lever. I was thinking of the larger pump because my Grandfather's 1530 has the larger pump and the lift in all conditions is much smoother. I greatly appreciate the advice on the filter and fluid. This 2040 is in excellent condition and I plan to keep for many years.

Before you do anything drastic, increase the fluid level in your reservoir.

I use the after market transhydraulic fluid with the JD spec XXXXX303XXX marked on the rear. Also spec'd for my MF and Fords.

On my 4020 and 4010, the dipstick has one line scribed on it which is supposed to be the full mark.

I added a front end loader, (JD 156 as I recall) which required a much larger volume of fluid moving around to support the loader. Having done that, I noticed the pump took a long time to pump up after sitting and the cylinders always had air in them.

Every time I started the tractor, I had to wait for the pump to stop rattlin to get p/s and get the loader to even start to move. Then I had to move it to full up and down 2 to 3 times to purge the air. Then all was fine.

Solution:

Added more fluid to the sump where the level was about 1/2 inch above full. Made a whopping big difference.

HTH

I forgot to mention that the hydraulic system was supposedly serviced by the Deere dealer right before I got the tractor.
