I am borrowing a john Deere 855 4x4 tractor with a hydro trans, all was going great until today. problem is its top speed slowed to 2mph in high range and 1/2 mph in low today!!! The pump has a louder whine (sounds like a ford ps pump empty on oil-just higher pictched) to it so I replaced and topped off the hydro trans fluid+filter useing 10w hydro oil. This did not help any ideas on what to look for?
Thanks Joe

I had a 755 and it did the same thing. Split the tractor and the hydraulic motor had damages to the brass pistons. This item rotates from the movement of the pedal and changes the vanes and pressure movement. This item cost $800 from JD. My purmp was okay, there is a pump at the top runs off engine shaft and there is a motor at the bottom. It scared me to death to mess with as the cost of parts, you can hold the $800 part in one hand. It may be something simple but in any regards the tractor probably had a lot of wear and you happened to have borrowed a problem. Reason for discussing with owner. I doubt that you brought on the real problem. I'm not a hydrastate fan once I saw what was going on inside the case.

My recommendations would be to immediately advise the owner. If there is internal damages or previous problems he may know. These are extremely expensive on parts. I don't think I would work on someone else's tractor without their consent. Ben Franklin quote was neither a "borrower or lender be" never fails to encounter a problem. Good luck.

changed oil, filter and it worked for 2 minutes in reply to ChuckW, 12-17-2004 13:26:57
ok, i changed the oil and filter, that filter sucked to get off! i greesed all the linkage and all was good on startup, performed perfect, then bam the forward pedal would not depress past 1/4 way and i was back to going super slow. So it seems as something is hanging the pedal up after it gets warm, any ideas?
btw- the owner is fine with whatever happens, he has more money than brains and said i can keep the thing if i put to much money into it.
Thanks, Joe

Also, after you dump all the old oil in the proces of cleaning that suction screen, put on another new filter to get rid of all that 10W hydraulic oil you put in and go right down to the local JD dealer and get the right fluid for it. Just tell them what you want to use the fluid in.

Did you also clean out the suction screen ? My 755 has one in the back above the drawbar area where the large suction pipe hooks on you have to unbolt a triangular shaped cover with 3 small bolts holding it on. I don't know if an 855 is in the same location, but it should have one somewhere. All your oil will run out of here also so get a big pan ready.

You may want to look at the linkage under the tractor to make sure nothing is jambed up in there like a branch,or rock and lube it up so it moves freely also check that the parking brake is fully off I also think mine has an interlock that the seat has to push down make sure it is not binding. Good Luck---Mike M
