I have a 1961 John Deere 1010 which has a lot of water in the oil. I understand that o-rings on cylinder sleeves generally causes this problem. Where are parts available; what is needed; how much total cost?

1010s and 2010s have a poor setup for sealing the sleeves against the water-jacket. One single o-ring per sleeve is all there is. Deere made the same mistake with some of their later engines, but all the engines EXCEPT for the 1010 and 2010s got updated sleeve and o-ring kits allowing the retrofitting for three seals per sleeve instead of one. To fix, you need to pull the head, pull out the pistons, remove the sleeve deck, clean things up, and then install four new o-rings, a sleeve deck gasket, and a new head gasket. That is the absolute minimum you'll need. Chances are, if it's been getting coolant dripping on the main bearing caps, the bearings will be bad also. And, if the pistons are out, it would be silly not to hone the sleeve walls and install new rings. If the top grooves are worn in the pistons, repairs shims are available and cheap. If you drain out the engine oil, and then pull the oil pan, you can usually see rust marks at the bottoms of the sleeves where coolant leaks have been occurring. I've got a 1960 and a 1961 1010, and I had to do them both in the past year.

I have a 1010 for sale, it sounds like the same problem. We have replaced the Tractor, and would like to sell. It would be a good fixer-upper or parts????? ???

You have what is called a sleeve & deck assembly. The sleeves are attached to the top deck. How much water do you call a lot?How many hours are on the tractor? It is quite possible the packings at the bottom of the sleeves are leaking. There are other places as well that might be leaking. If it were my tractor,I would pull the oil pan and then pressurize the cooling system. If the packings are leaking, you should be able to see the leak from under the tractor. It just depends upon what is found as to what it will take. You might be very lucky and get by with an overhaul gasket set and it might take a complete overhaul. Is there permanent antifreeze in the tractor? You may need a complete set of bearings.I wouldn't let it go too long before tearing it down.Good luck.
