Hey gang, this IS TRACTOR RELATED cuz I use my Motorhomes to attend Tractor Shows !!!! Anywho, soon as Im done here Im gonna tackle a hard job I both Love n Hate on the latest Class C Van Style Motorhome I purchased last week off Flea Bay up in Rochester New York (lookin for some moral support lol).

Basically, what I ALWAYS do on any of these 460 Fords is pull the fan, radiator and water pump and install a new Heavy Duty 4 Core Radiator and a new Water Pump. Those (*&^%$# Fords have 1000 bolts on the Water Pumps attached to alternators n smog pumps and PS Pumps and AC Compressors and the kitchen sink and are a BEAR to change. We all know GM is better lol BUT on the Class C Van Motorhoimes most are built on Fords, HOWEVER I will say, the 460 and C6 is a good power unit and has never let me down provided I keep fuel flowign to her. This ones fine (the water pump) but I once changed a waterpump on a 460 Van Style Class C Ford on the Road in Gainesvelle Florida in the rain and IM NEVER GONNA CHANGE ONE ON THE ROAD AGAIN so I replace em when I buy a new coach with over 50K miles on it. In order for them to cool when in the Mohave Desert, I ALWAYS replace the radiators with new 4 core units plus EVERY BELT N HOSE plus add another Tranny Cooler (maybe a filter) and have the Fluid n filter flushed n changed. Then its new wires, cap n rotor, double platinum plugs, new 2 1/2 duals n turbo mufflers to let em breatheeeee eeeee eeeee.

HOWEVER GHRRRRR RRRRR RRRRR the tough job I dread on this one is there are 2 exh manifold bolts broke off flush with the head which I absolutely WILL NOT TOLERATE (even thought they arent currently leaking) but the heads n valves n engine are excellent and I hate to pull the heads if I dotn have to. Fortunately, they are the back 2 on the pasenger side so maybe I can use an angle drill and drill em out????? ? On that same side once the exh manifold is removed I will install all new exh pipe mount studs and use anti sieze and new brass or stainless nuts when reconnecting the pipe (which is leaking now where it mates to manifold grrrrr rrrrr rrrrr r)

FINALLY, you cant even see of get to most this stuff until the DUAL smog pumps grrrrr rr and all them hoses n stainless pipes to the smog manifold are all first removed. This is carburetor so all them pumps n hoses n pipes etc etc etc might accidentally get lost and properly capped n plugged off and not find their way back????? ??? )(*& happens you know lol.

My plan is to do the tear down today (its like 50 degrees here) then get the new radiator n water pump etc Monday and start her back before it gets too dern cold since this is an outside but under roof on protected south side lean to job.

God Bless yall n have a safe blessed n happy new year. See you maybe at the Florida Flywheelers in late February if I get this dern thing back toghther by then lol. Anybody wanna come help me????? ???

Thanks everyone, Welllll lllll l, when I started there were already 2 manifold bolts broken and I broke one more (despite my slowwwww milking in n out turning as I recommend on the boards), so Im gonna go ahead n drop the manifold now n see if I can weld washers n nuts or get vise grips on the exposed portions n use heat n cool n see if I can get those three out. If not, I gotta pull the head which means I may as well pull em both and have the valves ran (even though they seem fine) so both sides will be equal and like new grrrrr rrrrr .

Clooney, I like the bushing n left hand drill bit approach and I have a right angle drill so theres a chance that may have worked, unfortunatley the gasket was already starting to leak sooooo o I gotta pull the manifold anyway.

I was cussing FORD all day yesterday cuz of how like 15 bolts are on the Water Pump PLUS the AC and PS and Alternator and brackets out the ying yang are all attached n have to be removed to even find the water pump grrrrr rrrrr. On my buddys 454 Chevy he dropped a water pump in Kansas and in 15 minutes I had it out ..... .... ONLY 4 bolts hold them plus a couple hoses/clamps and all the accessories arent hangin onto them like them *&^%$#@ Fords lol.

I have enough junk of 2 smog pumps and hoses n vacuum valves and check valves n belts n tubes n canisters n breathers to fill a wheelbarrow WHICH ARE GONNA BE LOST so I can see the top and front of the engine again. She needs the vacuum for distributor advance n tranny shifting (carb not injected so no computer) and one heater control and thats all shes gonna get then dual 2 1/2 free flow exhaust. I usually gain 1 mpg after all that.

Thanks again n Happy New Year

a trick i learned from a diesel mech get a piece of steel pipe that will fit in the hole and take a stick welder and weld it to the broken bolt the heat helps break it loose and if it breaks you you were going to have to take it apart any way.

John, can't help you with that Ford but if those exhaust manifold gaskets aren't leaking now I would be tempted to use a mirror & strong light to see if the broken bolts are centered in the manifold holes, then make a couple of brass inserts to drive in the manifold holes to act as drill guides then use a L/H drill bit & drill those broken bolts out right through the manifold holes.. If you can make inserts [even if you need to off-set the bushing hole to match the broken bolt centers ] you will have a ready made drill guide to keep the drill bit tracking straight while you drill in there where you probably can’t even see anyhow.. With luck the drill bit will get almost all the way through & catch the broken stub & spin it out on the end of the drill bit.. If it doesn’t work you will have to pull the manifolds anyway..

If the bolt stubs come out then just use a larger bit & drill the brass inserts out.

Good Luck_____ Clooney

John,

Good luck with the broken bolts! I wish I was closer I wouldn't mind giving you a hand!

Whenever you plan to sell something, let me know! If this is the detail you follow with all your projects, I'll buy it!
