I'm looking at 4440 w/appx 4000 hours but am concerned with the way it starts. It takes right off when you start it up but seems to rev up higher than it should and knocks a couple times then runs nice. I witnessed it on the dyno and put out 136 hp w/little to no smoke. The dealer says its the nature of the beast but would like to hear from this "dealership". thanks. Any pros or cons on this tractor would be appreciated also.

Jim, As already stated the starting character is normal. The reason they start this way is to make tractor start easier (more fuel delivery at a cranking speed), pump rack is held in a full fuel position with a magnet, governor pulls rack from magnet when engine starts. If you do not want engine to continue to rev after starting an option you can do when starting is start tractor and very quickly pull out the fuel stop and shove it back in when tractor starts, pull stop just enough to pull rack from magnet before engine revs clear up, you may only have to pull it out part way just enough to help the governor pull the rack from magnet. Anther option when tractor is warm and you know it will start easy is pull the stop all the way out and crank the engine while slowly pushing in stop, when tractor starts finish pushing the stop in. Some tractors will start / act different from others due to there actual engine mechanical condition but it won't hurt any of them to try these methods on. Good Luck, DW

Looks like everyone else has already filled you in on the "Revving". Perfectly normal. I own a 4440 that my father-in-law bought new. It's done the same thing since day one.

And if you found a 4440 with only 4000 hours, and you DON'T buy it, let me know where it's at! In my humble opinion, they are the best tractors ever built. Mine now has 7800 hours and is still like new. Definately one that Mother Deere should be proud of! John

Jim, this is indeed the nature of the beast. I know you can alter the aneroid and "neutralize" this feature but I am not as concerned about it as I once was. G-MAN needs to chime in here but I know my 9500 combine revs up more or less an equivalent amount and while watching the digital tach on it it will only rev to about 1400-1500 before coming down to 1200 at slow idle. My 4440 doesn't rev any more than the combine does. Your dealer is right- nothing to be concerned about. If it has a good diesel "knock" that just means it is "healthy". Mike

I used a 4640 for a season a few years ago, and it did the same thing. It's just a little worrisome to hear that when you're used to hearing IH or Olivers starting. Jim.

There's a magnet in the injection pump that holds the fuel rack wide open at startup, until the engine revs like HECK, and the governor overcomes the strength of the magnet, and takes control of the engine speed.

So, that "revving" deal is the nture of the beast.
