The starter is not engaging when the key is turned. The batteries are new,(24v system) and the right instrument light comes on, but the left (Gen) light stays off. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The problem is fixed. It was a bad battery terminal post connector that had corroded. It was not visually bad, but I identified it by the sparks coming off the battery when I tried to start the tractor. I figured it was a connection problem. A new cable battery post connector solved the problem. Thanks for all the comments and helpful info by all those who added to this posting. 2117echo

Measure each batterie's own voltage from post to post when attempting to crank. Then test the starter from post to post and starter post to solenoid input while attempting to start. An old cable or connection may have blown open as previously stated. Do all the lights etc work. Do they change when when while attempting to crank?

Does the starter spin but not engage the flywheel? The dash light may not be working if the fuse wire on the jumper cable between the batteries got tore off when you changed the batteries. If nothing hapens at all when you turn the key to start check the neutral safty switch under the dash on the shift quadrant.

The starter does not turn at all. It had run with the new batteries prior to this problem. We had a very cold couple of days and lots of snow. The first day it started fine. The second day, it cranked but would not start. I let it sit for two minutes, then attempted to start it again. That is when the problem occurred. I suspect that some connection burned out. I wondered if anyone knew a fast way to check if the ignition was getting voltage to the correct terminals on the bendix. Also, I wondered if the voltage regulator is shot. Thanks

Check your grounds and also the connection between solenoid and starter. Use a tester to see that you are getting voltage to starter when key is turned. Also, make sure you are not having problems with safety mechanism on gear shift that will not let you start it in gear. Our starter on our 4010 diesel quit working, tried a new solenoid but found it was dead shorting so we have to get a new one.
