Erratic Oil Pressure

Last week my model 50 started showing abnormally high oil pressure. I checked the level and it was normal. Oil looked good. Usually the oil pressure sits a little below "High" but now it was sitting a little over "High". The engine was warmed up so it was not a cold oil sort of thing.

I adjusted the oil pressure regulator and found that while I could adjust the pressure, it did not adjust smoothly. Seemed to want to jump from too low to too high. Eventually I settled on the area where I wanted it.

A few days later when I started the engine, the oil pressure jumped off scale. I ran the engine at low speed till it warmed up and eventually it came down to the "High" mark.

I suspect I've got a problem with the oil pressure regulator. Traditionally this engine shows very steady good oil pressure regardless of engine speed or temperature. Now it's all over the place.

I've included a section of the parts manual. What are the likely suspects? I suspect part #20 as being broken. What sort of material is the bushing (#18) made of? If its rubber I guess it could have cracked and come loose. I noticed that there is also a bypass (relief) valve for cases where the oil filter is clogged (parts 5 & 6) but I don't think I've got a filter problem.

Anybody had this happed to them?

Thanks!
John

John, 17-21 would be the place with 18 & 19 being the most likely.. Usually broken parts mean low oil pressure & plugged passages & plugged by-pass parts mean high pressure..

Make sure you don't have a defective oil pressure gauge as that could be your problem & ice crystals in the oil filter or a plugging oil filter could also be a cause..

Basically all the pressure adjustment does is let out the extra ,,, if you are plugged between the pressure regulator & filter head the regulator can’t help you any.

I’m posting remote at the moment so don’t have any full oil system data so if you still can’t find your problem post back or E-Mail & later I will try to dig up more places to look..
