I thought I would update my 620 starter situation. I replaced the switch and post on the starter. I replaced the four bushings on the starter. A note here. The bushing in the starter gear has part number 11119R. It is no longer available and the sub number is 810620. The starter already had two busings with this number. Well 810620 is no where near the correct busing. I got the other three bushings installed with no problems. However, the 810620 busing (in place of the 11119R) did not fit. I went back to JD and they rechecked the number and said it was right. I asked if they could put the busing in and two minutes and $10 later it was in. You may see what’s coming. I got home and the shaft would not go in the bushing. An old guy in town helped me hone it out. It was about .008 too small. So be warned, that the 810620 is not the proper replacement for the 11119R in a starter, even though JD says it is.

I moved the ground cable from the seat pedastal to a bolt holding the pedastal to the tractor. I cleaned all other connections, including the starter bypass which was badly corroded. The brushes were fine.

I got it all put back together and installed today. It was cold, about 5F, but not too bad. I hooked up the battery cables. Switch on, choke on, pressed on the starter pedal. I really don’t know how well the starter worked because it was running instantly. I’ll bet the flywheel didn’t make a quarter of a turn. That’s the way it’s supposed to start.

Thanks to all who provided valueable input for another successful project.

Isn't it better knowing what shape it is in that starter now ? Could you see any evidence of the armature dragging ? Sometimes you can see rub marks where the armature rubs the field coil shoes.

The armature may have been slightly touching the field coils in a couple of spots. The busings were all dry and in need of lubricant. As you said, I now know what's in there and it works. Whoever worked on it last was not very careful. The two screws that hold the nonbraided wire to the brushes were crossthreaded. I had to get a 10-32 tap and clean out the holes just to get new screws to start. The rewards are worth the effort.
