Whats this JD tractor worth?

third party image

A friend of mine hauled this tractor out of a field a while back and has decided that its either going to be sold soon or taken to the scrap iron dealer.

So my question is this, is this thing worth saving for parts or are they a common tractor with little value?

I hate seeing this old iron sent to the scrap heap but don't have time or space for yet another project myself.

Thanks

Brad

No such thing as a scrap John Deere 2 cyl. Drag it home do nothing and in 10 years your $200 or so in the A will have out performed 200 in a money market. Don't believe me. I passed up many unstyled G's in the late 70's for $300 because who would want to restore and haul that gas burning beast to a show or parade. Five years ago I had to beg someone to buy a longhood A but today they bring more here than a 48-49 A. Happy collecting.

I would not dare let it get to a scrap yard. There are a lot of good parts left from what i see. I could use the seat myself.

Spray some paint on it--wala-- restored.Seriously there are lots of those around if the internals are good you could buy new repro grilles a dash should be easy to find it may not take much to get it back running again if it isn't stuck .There is always lots of good parts left on something like that to use on other projects too.Try not to give to much for it you should be able to outbid a scrap iron dealer and come out ahead while still saveing it.

This tractor has some major damage, looks like its been in a roll over. The steering colum is broken along with the mashed steering wheel and the lift lever is bent to the left. I would be checking that main case under the steering colum to see if it was broken and allowed water into transmison. This one is a parts only tractor and not worth very much with all the damage, seen and unseen. Jon

That long adjustment lever bolted onto the front of the right rear axle. What was it attached to and what did it do? There was a rarely seen device similar to that which will swing the dawbar to either the right or left of center. It's used with drawn ploughs on side hills to counter the ploughs drift down hill.

That bent lever is the depth control for the right front gang of the cultivator. What you are talking about is the landing lever (or sidehill hitch)which mounts behind the seat and is used to shift the drawbar. I have three of those for the late lettered and at least early numbered series tractors.

Yes it is, however the one you have referenced is from an earlier model tractor. Dad's 41 B had one very much or identical to this, which disappeared when he bought a 46 A in Nov. of 46. (Keep in mind my last sight of it was 58 years ago. The remains of the A pictured above has the newer style drawbar as did ours, and a angle iron (c.a. 2x2 was bent to attach the cogged plate to the side of the drawbar frame. Thanks Bob for calling this to my ad attention. (markinrh@uwec.edu) I think this is the first landing lever I have seen advertised.

No, what is in the picture is for mounted cultivators. The piece that you posted off of Ebay is what he is looking for. But not on the tractor in the post.

That allows you to raise or lower the cultivator (or whatever plow) on that side small amounts to plow at depth you need. They worked good. There is one on each side but most of the one on the left side is missing.

There is a set on the old corn scuffler here too. I was hoping it was a mismounted drawbar swinging unit $$$.

Rollamatic is very common on that model "A" in this part of the country, probably retro fit. A friend of mine said rollamatic was the best thing ever that John Deere put on a tractor. When he was a boy, he had to run the tractor in the field with the cultivator and he had to constantly fight with the steering wheel running down the middle of the row. He couldn't keep it in the middle cause the dirt sloping up to the plants on either side would pull the tires one way then the other. Then when "Rollamatic" came out it was like driving with power steering. Also, look at the drawbar, no wear, this tractor spent all or most of it's working life pushing a cultivator.

It is a long hood A. It should be worth 200.00. Ask for offers. I am sure it is worth more then the scrap dealer will give.

It's a 1946 or 47 "A". What city and state is it in? --Walt--

The tractor is located in Jefferson Arkansas which is 30 miles south of Little Rock in I-530.

If anyone wants to call and ask about it my number is 870-540-2253.
