ITS FIXED, NUTTIN MONEY AND A LOT OF TIME COULDNT CURE LOL

Thanks to everyone above, I either had already or tried most all the excellent comments which I appreciated. I did get a boot disc from the site Clooney posted plus found some old ones around here, but that didnt fix it either. It would boot into Safe Mode, but some corrupted files (caused by the Virus) caused it to have a System Failure in which case it recycled itself. The Norton/Symantec (Rememebr, it was Norton 2005 which still let it in and couldnt cure it grrrrr rrr) and McAfee and even CA Associates (CA) eTrust nor Micro Trend nor the Microsoft Support Techs nor all the stuff posted could clean it nor let me delete or rename the infected files etc.

Finally, I did what C Peter mentioned as I wanted a new HD anyway. My main was a 80 gig and the backup (where I keep critical data backed up) only a 20. Therefore, I bought a new 80 (on sale for $50 at Office Depot),,,,, ,,,placed it in and removed the old infected HD,,,,, ,,,installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 with alllll ll latest updates,,,,, ,,,,, installed CA eTrust Anti Virus,,,,, ,,,installed CA eTrust Firewall,,,,, ,,,,,installed CA Pest Partrol (spyware tool),,,,, ,,,,,installed some other brands of Spyware Removal,,,,, ,,,,,SET THEM ALL TO AUTO DETECT AND REPAIR AND RUN FULL TIME,,,,, ,,,,installed the old HD as a slave and ran anti virus and spyware and deleted the infected files out the ying yang,,,,, ,,,, again searched n scanned any data I wanted to xfer to the new master HD,,,,, ,,,xferred the data I needed,,,,, ,,,,, ,FORMATTED N WIPED CLEAN THE OLD HD,,,,, ,,,,installed my programs to the new HD and got it all set up like I wanted (again with Anti Virus n Firewall n Spyware runnin n scannin out the ying yang),,,,, ,,,,, ,,,,, installed Norton Ghost like Clooney mentioned,,,,, ,,,,backed up my new HD to the just formatted n wiped clean slave,,,,, ,,,,,created some new emergency boot disks,,,,, ,,,,AND SHES RUNNIN LIKE A CHAMP. The CA eTrust Anti Virus and Firewalls run auto and constant and are reporting blocked intrusion attempts every so often Yayyyyy yyyyy yy

I guess the best Anti Virus and Firewalls and Spyware ALWAYS RUNNIN and having her backed up with Ghost and 2 Hard Drives is best I can do for now and I am gonna look into the Firefox Browser. One other thign I may consider is Drive Partition so if I ever have to wipe n reinstall my OS I dont have to wipe the entire HD, Norton Ghost dont do that but with it Im not even sure I need to worry about that all again????? The Partition Programs would allow me to just wipe n reinstall say the OS Partition on my HD without havign to wipe it all right??? Any you guys know or used it???

Thanks again n God Bless all for the time patience n help you provided

John, actually Ghost will allow you to partition (or change partition size) as long as you Ghost out each original partition to a remote like your 2nd drive,, then reallocate partition size on your “removed from” drive, then Ghost back in.. The only catch is: the partitions must be as large or larger than the original Ghost out size…

It works great if installing a larger drive.. Just Ghost out all original partitions to a remote drive or C/D,,,, then install the larger drive & partition to your liking,,,,, then Ghost back in to the new drive.. As long as the partition space is larger, no problem.. Once re-Ghosted back in you can move the data to new or any different partitions created…

Another way--Lets say you have 4 meg of data spread across 3 partitions.. Just find a partition that will hold the 4 meg,, then place it (move it) all to one partition,, then Ghost it out to a remote location,, then re-partition your “removed from” drive to whatever you like as long as at least one partition is 4 meg or larger,, then Ghost back into that partition.. Once all back on that original drive move it around as needed to all the new partitions. Not as easy as “Partition Magic” but will work if needed.. & if something goes wrong you have back up copies in the Ghosted out folders.. I love that program..

Another way yet—is to move all stored data on your first drive to your second.. Then Ghost out the operating system & base C drive to the second drive,, then partition the first drive as needed,, then ghost the operating system & C drive back in to the 1st partition,, then move the stored data back as needed..

Im just learning that Ghost Program, looks like it can do all I need, thanks for the tips. I can tell you for sure, Im gonna have all the critical boot up info and maybe even dual OS on BOTH drives, including the Ghosted OS and maybe even a regular uncompressed OS and boot up files (boot.ini, autoexec.bat command. com etc etc etc), plus some home made and the Ghost emergency start up discs so if this happens again Im covered. Im getting too odl for this lol

Take care good Clooney

Sorry you had all that trouble. Another way to deal with a seriously infected windows system is to boot the system from a "live" Linux CD such as knoppix or Mephis. Since the OS that is running is not windows, and since it is not running off the hard drive, you can change, replace, and clean out files on the hard drive without that virus bein" able to do nutthen" about it.

Depending on what you are doing with your computer, you may be able to switch to Linux instead of Windows and just avoid the whole virus/spyware mess. In my Architecture office we have reduced the use of windows to one machine that runs payroll. The machines don"t crash, they don"t get viruses, they don"t slow down, they just work.

Regards,

Kurt

One question I have for you is do you have hi-speed internet? If so, do you have a linksys router/firewall/switch installed? If not it would be a smart investment. It acts as a gateway for your home network, all that is seen on the internet is your router and not your actual PC. Intrusion attempts will be cut drastically and you can even limit what ports are open on them. Just something to consider if you don"t already have one. Also if you ever have the problem where your system blue screens on start up or some system file gets hosed up you can always do a dual boot. Meaning when you go to load a new OS on the machine instead of placing all the system files in "sytem root"\windows change windows to windows1 or name it something else. This will allow you to start off the fresh system files, remove or back up your data, then reformat. That way you don"t lose anything. Just one of the tricks I have learned in the past. I doubt if would have helped with your paticular problem though. Glad you got it fixed! Welcome back

Kris, Yes Im on DSL and dont have a router now but am gonna get one soon (on sale for $60) so when my favorite daughters home from college she can use her lap top upstairs wireless. I have the 2 HD's now and havent yet placed the OS in 2 places (like a Windows and a Windows2 etc), but I have all sorts of backup boot discs and with that Norton Ghost 9.0 may never need them?? I have my HD and system up n clean n near perfect now and its mirror imaged by Norton Ghost on my backup HD, so hopefully, Im god to go for a day ot two, the Firewall n Anti Virus seem to be blocking and reportign intrusion attempts so far at least.

later

Yes you are thinking right, however you need to secure the wireless side of that router down. Other wise little jimmy with a laptop from down the street can hop on your wireless connection and try what he wants. He is basically on your network at that point. When you get closer to getting it installed feel free to email me. I work with wireless on a daily basis. I was in charge of our wireless network here at work for 3 years and I help build the architecture for it too. Let me know if you want help!
