I"m trying to restore a 1939 JD H and am hearing a clicking noise when I turn the flywheel. It wasn"t running when I bought it. At first I just thought it was the magneto, but after removing it and the valve cover and crankcase cover, I think I"ve narrowed down the problem. The click is coming from the #1 intake valve. When I look through the crankcase cover I noticed the 2 pushback rods are moving closer in together than the # 2 cylinder rods. It looks like they"re shifting at a certain location on the camshaft when I turn the flywheel. I haven"t removed the governor yet, but I"m wondering if the camshaft is bad or something else is causing this?

Thanks for everyone's replies and help. Looks like I'll buy a mirror and stethoscope to get a better idea as to where sound is coming from. I'll repost if I find anything. Thanks again.

1951G, those 39 H’s are a breed or their own.. The cam drive, clutch, shifter, etc, are all a little different than the 40 & later H’s..

On that “hearing a clicking noise when I turn the flywheel” question..

Are you sure you just aren’t hearing the governor’s internal weights flopping around? Those will flop out as the flywheel is turned & make a pretty good racket.. The noise might just be appearing as the #1 intake push-rod moves.. (this would be my #1 guess as to your noise)..

Another possible area is the camshaft L/H drive gear area.. Those 39 H’s don’t have an adjustable L/H cam bearing so end up with a lot of slack in the cam to crank gear.. That also allows the cam bearing to flop around & allows the cam to jump as the pushrods/tappets exert force on the cam lobes as they go over center of the cam lobes.. Over the years I have found a few 39 H’s with loose cam gears (that is a common wear area) & once the cam gear becomes loose on the cam splines it can make all kinds of noises.. I have also found a few with asymmetrical wear on the cam gear due to the harsh firing points on those small 2-cylinder engines.. Deere addressed that problem on the 40 & up H’s with an adjustable L/H cam bearing,, a slightly larger & heavier flywheel, & an optional (external) L/H cam gear governor gear oiling kit..

Probably the place to start is to use a long hose or mechanics stethoscope & listen to the governor while spinning the flywheel..

Then engage the clutch with the trans in neutral, then try spinning the clutch pulley in both directions.. If a lot of slop is felt, or clacking noises are heard, suspect a loose L/H cam gear area.. BUT,,,Before condemning the L/H cam bearing, pull the clutch pulley cover & see how much of that pulley rotation & noise is coming from the clutch inner drive disk to cam splines (another common wear problem on the 39 H).. Maybe drive a couple of small brad nails between the clutch disk & cam splines to temporarily take that play out so you can diagnose the cam bearing side..

A 39 H with noises is not unusual..

It could be something as simple as one of the pushrods are not seated in the follower cup. My "H" had one like that. You might have to use a mirror to look back in there so you can see.

When you get them located in there properly, you'll be able to spin them with your fingers and determine if you have a bent one.

Dear Frank:
My younger brother, Tony, is president of the Deere Valley (or maybe Dear Valley)Tractor Club in Davenport, Iowa and proud owner of our Dad's old JD model 60, (Dad farmed 320 acres in western Iowa from 1949 till retiring in 1983) as well as two 1937 Model B's. He tells me that there is a Frank In Tallahassee who is a regular contributor to this site and a real steely-eyed wrench man-always ready with a helpful suggestion to other old tractor restorers. Tony gave me instructions on how to find you on this site.
I have lived here 16 years and do not have the resources/time for the sport by myself, but I really love getting my hands dirty with Tony when I visit him. If Tallahassee, Florida is indeed your home, I would love to correspond with you or, if really lucky, get to meet you-maybe even jump on the jack handle while you turn the rack to adjust the rear wheel spacing on an old piece, or hold the vice grips while you tighten that double nut that keeps coming loose.

I certainly don't want to intrude on your privacy, but if you would like to hear some green tractor flatland stories from the 50's through early 80's, or could use a hand sometime, please feel free to contact me at this address.

-damn Pioneer couplings!
-and whoever thought under the platform would be a good, cool, clean place for the batteries on the 3010?

Hi Tom:

Yes, I do indeed live near Tallahassee. I"m on US 90 East on the way to Monticello.

Are you saying you live in or near Tallahassee? If so, you ought to give me a call though I am only in town on weekends (I travel during the week...right now I am in Pasadena, CA.).

I am originally from W.Ohio, having moved to TLH in 1994. I"d be glad to give the nickel tour if you have the time. This weekend I"ll only be home on Sunday, but there"s no football, so if you have any time, stop on out.

My e-mail server is giving me fits right this minute, but it should be up later in the evening, but here are three addresses to try in order of preference as I check them:

frank@fboerger.com
frank.m.boerger@jpl.nasa.gov
wb8ens@aol.com

We"ll swap e-mails and phone numbers off site.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Frank

Have you first checked for stuck valves and bent pushrods?
