I am looking for a "large" tractor and have seen a 4840 that I like for $14,000. It has 3275 hours on a rebuilt engine and approximately 8000 hours on the whole tractor. I like everything about it except for two items that I have a question about. It will not go into park (8 speed powershift). The engine will not turn over when it is hot without turning the steering wheel. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I remember correctly the 8 speeds have a coil type spring on the park engagement that is common to break not engaging park. Check the linkage and see if there is any resistence when entering park. As for the starting problem, sometimes an electric solenoid is installed on the hyd pump to unload the built up pressure so that the engine can crank without trying to build hyd pressure. Turning the steering wheel while cranking has been a long time trick to helping cold John Deere's crank over in the winter time. It could also be a weak starter or batteries. Hope this is helpful.

Ryan, the shift lever can not be made to go into the park position. I can only get it to go as far "down" and still be able to go to reverse. Now for the starting problem. When I arrived at the gentleman's house the tractor was already running. I drove the tractor, then shut it off. After a few minutes I got back on and it would not start without the steering wheel trick. After letting the tractor sit for maybe 15-30 minutes I tried cranking it and it started with no problem. The tractor has brand new 6 volt JD batteries. Thanks a lot Ryan.

The park problem is more than likely caused by a siezed cable if it will not even go into the park position on the shift quadrant. As for the starting problem I would think that the field in the starter is shorted. With new batteries it should have no problem overcoming the load of the hyd pump if all of the connections from the starter to the battery are good and clean. Probably time for a reman starter. Good luck!
