I am considering a mid 1950's 420 for use around my property. Nothing heavy, just some mowing and snow removal with a blade. I have looked at the availability of parts for these machines and it looks pretty good.

I would appreciate any advice/opinions on this particular model. Specifically, is there anything I should look for? Any known trouble spots? Was the 420 a reliable JD? Also, any recommendations for a finishing mower? Is it possible to add a belly mower? Thanks in advance, Jim

The later models have slanted steering wheel, and the better models are 5 speed with live power. They have a 2 stage clutch, but if it's bad can be very expensive to repair. Also a lot of the tractors were used with bushogs and the transmissions may be trashed out. The transmissions are realitively light for bushog work, but if use be sure to use both a slip clutch on bushog plus and overriding clutch. The little tractors were good in their time but cannot begin to compete with the new hydraulics of today's tractors.

Drive it around a little before purchasing. If it doesn't have p/s, make sure it steers good. My son has one that steers like a log wagon. Look for lost motion in steering mechanism along with front wheel wobble out on the road.

I wouldn"t worry too much about the steering on a manual-steer. It"s pretty simple. I rebuilt mine (420T) last year for a couple of hundred $"s - and 90% of that was in the coupling that connects the two shafts. The tractor was totally un-controllable in 5th before the rebuild. now it steers like it did 48 years ago!

That being said, I sure wish I had power steering sometimes.....

The middle and later 420's starting in the 1957 production year had optional live pto. Power Steering became optional on all the wheeled chassis models at that time as well. They are a handy and likeable little tractor that do what they were designed to do well. They don't sound like all the other compact tractors either.

Minor detail but the 1958 420's had the slanted steering wheel.
