Looked at a 35 A this weekend and it had a Behlen Road Gear installed. I was wondering if someone could share some information as to who manufactured this and what was all involved to installing this in the transmission and if it increases the price or decreases the priced of a tractor? Are these units still around or are they something that if someone finds one they cost an arm and a leg? I would like to install one in my 37 A?

Jim, that Behlen overdrive unit was manufactured by the Behlen Mfg Co… That overdrive was not a factory option but was an aftermarket option.. It was probably originally installed after the original steel wheels were removed to give that “A” a faster road speed [probably just under 20 MPH in high gear.

~That Behlen unit was operated by putting the tractor's trans in neutral, then using the tractor’s hi-lo shifter in conjunction with the Behlen box shifter for either fifth or sixth gear.

~The trans has to basically come completely apart to install that Behlen unit as both transmission shafts need to be changed to longer shafts.

~I really can’t give you a price on a Behlen unit but have seen them go from about a low of $50.00 to well over $500.00.. I guess it depends on how bad you need one & where you look.

~As far as adding value to the tractor??.. It depends on the buyer.. Some people see it as a non original equipment piece & want to remove it as soon as possible & others like them as it does give a higher transport speed & is a little unusual..

~If a person wants an original tractor they are usually removed..

~Those darn overdrive units do stick out a ways behind the flywheel & can be hard on the knuckles when starting the tractor.

~If you look long enough you can find them at swap meets & tractor shows.. I saw one last year that was still un-installed & new in it’s original box [don’t remember the price though]..

~If you are looking for one be sure it has all the shafts & parts as those individual parts will be hard to find.. Most people don’t want to break a good unit apart & sell the pieces..

Clooney any idea how late a "B" the overdrive bolts into? Or does it only fit the early unstyled trans 4 speed version?

Glen, I haven't ever researched the end of use on the Behlen road gear boxes but once the 6 speed appeared it was no longer needed nor would it fit due to the extra gears on the outside of the 6 speed main case.
