I need a good pair of spoke rear wheel cutoffs for a 1937 John deere D, 28 inch rims, 12 spline hubs. there was fluid in my tires which rotted the rims so I need to replace both wheels. Or blank deep well 28 inch rims with 24 inch diameter accross the center of rims. I can rebuild them myself if I can find deep well rims. Any help would be very much appriciated. Thanks John

John I have 1 used 28" deep well, have you considered going the cast wheel? but you would still need the deep well rim.

Any good local ag equipment tire dealer should be able to help you with the rims or at least be able to order them in for you. Finding more good cutoffs with the 12 spline and 28 rim will be harder since most of the later ones will have 30s on them. Check around with some more salvage yards too as 28s were used on lots of other tractors too.

Thanks for the reply Glenn, The only new replacement rims I can find are flat rims which means my spokes will be too short and I have to extend them. I was hoping to find Deep well rims like the originals so all I have to do is cut the old rim off and weld a new one on. If you know anyone who sells the deep well rim I would greatly appriciate it. Thanks John

I understand what you mean on the spokes and needing more deep well rims. Got some of the 6 spline cut off ones with 28 deep rims but they are a decent set I broke concrete out of and plan to paint and sell them later. You might try millertire.com and see if they have them. Otherwise you might find some local 6 spline ones with the 28s and cut them off. You might also want to look at other salvage tractors in your area and just go with some cast centers and rims if you can find them.

I had the same problem except my rears spokes were ate up from the calcium that was in the tires. I found a set of 18.4 26 tires and rims from a combine and cut the spokes to fit the rim. The old D lookd good with the fat tires on it and they are about the same height. There are plenty of these at combine salvage yards and they are pretty cheap.

There you go John. Jerr8755 has a good idea that works. Just have to be sure to space out far enough away from the fenders. I was going to say before if you are looking for those narrow wheels you aren't going to be happy with tire size and height in most 28s made now anyway. Those wheels were made to use with old balloon style tires and I've seen a lot of them rubbing on the fenders on Ds when they get in wet soil or mud. I had a D with 32s on rear and 20s on front and it also had the small rear gears for road speeds to road a thresher. Those rubbed on the fenders in mud. Never tried the 30s on a unstyled D so don't know if they are too tall or not? Good luck.
