I have a "50 model B and am sorta tossin around the idea of installing an electronic ignition. The only problem is that the tractor is a 6-volt and all these systems I see run off 12-volts. Should I convert to a 12 in order to be able to install the ignition? How hard is it to do both conversions?
-Thanks

My 2 cents.

Friend had a Farmall C with 6 volt. Put in 6 volt electronic ignition. When cracking it would not start. When he contacted the company that made the system. Was told "you need 5.2 volts minimum to have the system fire when cranking." Points are back in. 12 volt systems are better, I have been told.

My opinion, if converting to electronic ignition. Switch to 12 volt.

I have had 4 B's in the past, all were over to 12volt with no problems. Left starter 6 volt. You need to change generator/regulator/light bulbs. If electronic going on change over to delco distributor. Have put electron on 6 tractors and can't say enough about it. About 40,000 spark, no plug fouling, ie. Your dollar but in my opinion 12V plus electronic the way to go.

If you get your original 6 volt system up to snuff you should have no problem with it.I hope you have a Delco dist. as those Wico's are not very good.I'd much rather have a mag. then one of those. I see many posts where people changed over to electronic ign. only to still have problems. I think this is because the original problem was never corrected and the electronic was a crutch trying to compensate for worn out engines, bad wires and plugs, and poor/dirty connections. Anyone is free to do as they want but I like to stick with the $10 points tune up kits and have not had any trouble except for an occasional bad new condenser. I just can't see spending $150 for something that can go bad in an instant and leave you stitting--no patching jobs to keep it going---then you'd be out another $150
