I'm thinking about getting a 4430 as my BIG tractor. My question is what type of transmission should I get for all around hay farm work? Thanks for your time.

Go for the powershift if you want easy shifting. But you must rememember that it only has 8 gears, the gaps between gears is rather big for some types of work and when heavily loaded.

is the answer for hay work. in reply to Joe VA, 03-15-2005 12:16:51
Round baler without bale kicker, you definitely want powershift. Loader work, you definitely want powershift. Pulling the haybine/discmower you definitely want powershift for downshifting on the end.

In a nutshell, forward and reverse work, powershift.

Yes, the only time I would like to have more gears like the fifteen speed powershift has in 50 on up series is for pulling the field chopper.

I have a 4430 powershift , bought it new in 1976 . Also have a 3020 , 4020 and 4840 all powershift , personally I wouldn't have anything else . We also had 4020 sybcro's and a good running 4640 quad that I got new in 1981 .The 4640 quad range was used for the grain cart , 13 knife 3pt NH3 bar , ran C1&2 , now try shifting to C3 with 750bu behind you , try backing up to a NH3 tank in C reverse , maybe some are better operators than we are but it is next ro impossible , to go to alower reverse you got to go back to A range to do it right . Neighbor and I co-own a round baler , he has a 4440 quad , bale in A4 , to go to reverse you go to 1-2 , grind to R , my 4430 Powershift slip her in R , no grinding etc . My old '64 3020D powershift , 148 loader , foot throttle , forward and reverse just like a reverser , don't use the pedal most of the time . Yes the powershift is jerky at times , but overall I think it is better overall . In the 4640 I used B2 & C2 90% of the time , those two gears are almost identical to 4th and 5th in 4840 Powershift . The 4640 I had I sold to a neighbor and bought another neighbor's 1982 4840 at his auction . The 4840 on a 750 grain cart , start in a low gear and keep shifting up or down . I'll second the statement somebody else made about powershift and clean oil , also the system pressure must be kept at the maximum so the clutches don't slip .

Hey Joe,
I have had 2 4430's with quad ranges and I still have one. I like the quad ranges pretty good. I personally don't like the jumping that the powershifts do when going from gear to gear, I have drove a few and just don't see the big thrill, unless you count that high dollar repair bill if it goes down, thats not too say that a quad or syncro won't cost ya too. I also have a 4230 with a syncro and I like it pretty well too. It does the job and no real complaints. I would prefer a quad but thats what it had so there ya go.

i forgot to add i wouldnt want anything to do with a syncro range....i personally dont think there any worse then driving a quad range but reliability isnt there. i really shouldnt say that its there and is very good but not for constant shifting. if your plowing put it in a gear and drive 1 mile turn around and go back there great but for bailing where you might be hitting bunches and slowing down for piles its not there.

i don tknow where any of those guys are coming from. dont know at all. 1 lever can power shift ie the name i dont know where you guys come from but i got some big hills and if im pulling the bailer and a full wagon or 2 wagons i dont want to try out starting up hill in road gear. a power shift is so much handier sometimes not necessarily for hay but some other things like disc and drag i dont have enough hands. yeah on a quad range you can go from 4-3 or 2-1 easy but what if your already running in 3 or 1? i know you could go down or up a range such as you like b3 you could probably go up to c2 or so but aint it just easier if you just pull one lever back and arent restricted to just one gear. also a power shift with clean fluid are pretty bullet proof and they dont mind back and forth work. in fact thats how they tested them when they were new on a set of rollers and it went from 8th forward to 4th reverse as fast as they could w/o waiting in each gear and perform flawless. also with discin etc w/the powershift you can grab a gear or even 2 on a hill and then grab them back when your on flat esp if your trying to get by w/a tractor thats a tad underpowered for the job. if the tractor has enough power for theh job for what you want quad range is fine but seems things just keep getting bigger and i keep needing more power even though acreage has gone down aint that strange???? always finding stuff so i can get it done quicker as farming is the weekend job after the full time job the wife and hte kids..... .maybe just me but i dont have alot of horsepoer ranges (i do but big gaps inbetween) and dont have alot of money to spend i think the powershift is more versitle more user friendly and you wont be clutching and grinding with a powershift

One common complaint with the powershift is that there is a big difference in speed between the gears. That is a main reason that the 16 speed quad range is sometimes more desirable. This is especially noticable if you have to run a pull type chopper. Have done this with a powershift 4440 and a quad 4250. The 4250 has less power but the ground speed was faster because the 4440 had a large gap between the speed in the gears, and it didn't have enough power to run the chopper in the higher gear.

In a 4430, I wouldn't even consider a synchrorange. They're not very common at any rate. If using a round-baler, a Quad-Range would probably work better than a powershift, for backing up to dump the bale. For square bales, it probably wouldn't matter much.

Personally, I like the quad-range better than the synchro or 8-speed power-shift. Have had all three in various tractors..... ..
