Hi guys. I am thinking of buying a JD 1010 that does not have power steering. I am a Ford man and know little about the John Deere line. Is it possible to add power steering on this tractor? Also does this tractor have live PTO? Any thing to watch out for on this particular tractor? I have not seen it yet, but plan to look at it tomorrow. Thanks Jim

There are those that say the JD 1010 was the worst tractor JD ever built. Mostly based on problems with the engine which has a relatively unique design where the sleeves are attached to a deck plate and replacements are beginning to be hard to find. The design seems prone to leakage. Others grumble about the transmission (which is essentially from a 420 or 520) and drive train.

A few proclaim that the later vintage 1010 have run fine in their hands for nigh on 40 years and its not a dog.

I have neither interest in any 1010 or any experience, this is just based on comments I've seen on JD BBS like this one over the past few years.

P.S. can be added. All it takes is time,$$$ and a donor tractor. pto can be live or trans driven. 540,1000 or both at the same time. If it's diesel run an oil smaple looking for antifreeze in the oil. What serial number? There was three different groups of 1010's. How much?

It"s a 1965 gas in very nice condition. He want"s $5500.00 for it. I"m thinking I will probably pass on it and find a little bigger tractor with a better track record. It makes more sense buying one that already has power steering on it anyway. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate your time. Jim

Which chassis style? His price is at least double what a good 1010 diesel is worth. And 50% too high for a good gasser. The 1010 gas tractor is fine. It's the diesel 1010 and more so the early 2010's with either engine. The last year of 2010's were much improved and as a gasser should be ok if cheap.

Ask around about a 2040/2240/2440. I've got a 22/loader and it's as handy as a pocket in a shirt. No problems and they're affordable.
