Air Compressor Question

Well, after shooting half a day on the *&^%$ thing it wont pump enough air to air up a rubber chicken, but having bought it at a consignment auction I didnt expect too much. Its a Dresser 2 cylinder 2 stage V Series 300, but unlike my Ingersoll Rand 2 cylinder V 2 stage, its NOT a flathead but each head has two cylindrical removeable thingys that Im guessing are valve or reed assemblies of some sort??? ????? ????? ????? ????

It looked good n clean with no leaks and a very smoth crank feel and action and runs very smooth n quiet with no knocks or hammers nor any crank end play, IT JUST WONT FREAKIN PUMP.

Anywho, the air inlet port on the big low pressure piston BOTH BLOWS AND SUCKS although seems to me due to some valves or reeds (hopefully encased inside the removable cylinders on top each head) it ought to SUCK AIR IN ONLY, being its the inlet side on the big piston side. The big pistons output, of course, has a line over to the smaller high pressure pistons input with its output going to the receiver.

I want somebody to tell me (and not be kidding lol) "Yo John T, it just has a gummed or sticking reed or valve and all ya gotta do is remove those cylindrical valve bodies on top the heads n clean n free n polish them up and she will pump till the cows come home"

Can anybody tell me that and be serious and give me any tips of what might be the problem (why the inlet sucks n blows, stuck valve I hope)

A Frustrated John T

John T, you have answered guestions for me in the past so I am going to attempt to help you on this. This pump, if my memory serves me correct, will have discs for valves. From what you are saying about getting air out of the intake of the big piston, then the intake valve is not closing to allow the air to go into the smaller piston to be compressed again for the boost in pressure therefore that reason it is a two stage compressor. Take the top cap, its either a bolt on vap or a screw on cap and carefully lay out the parts as you have removed them. Check to see if the disc or spring are damaged. These need to be be cleaned of rust or carbon and the inside valve assembly bead blasted free of rust or carbon and I use anti seaze when I reassembly these. I would suggest that you do this to all the valves. The intake assembly get sticky or rusty and the exhaust valves are the ones that get carbon buildup . Either can have a broken disc sprng or damaged disc that will keep it from pumping. One more suggestion to look at. If the compressor had a Unloader on it then there will be a diaphram in that assembly that could be ruptured and not letting the valve close to build pressure. I have repaired many of compressors in my time and if you need more info or what I wrote don't make sence, then email me and I will give you my phone # so we can get on the same page. Better yet, do yo have any photo's you can send? Jim

Either free up the reeds or replace them where they have rusted off.
