I have a la with a c wico mag that was running fine. shut it off the other day and went to start it back up and nothing.Took off the mag and very little fire, but I noticed if I turned mag up side down so dogs didnt catch and spun it, It would throw a vey good spark. Put in pts. cond., and new coil and it is still the same, nothing on impluse, till you turn over mag and spin rotor by hand, good spark. Im stumped, do you have any suggestions?

The impulse works fine, I'm turning it over so the dogs won't catch as I hold it so I can spin it by hand. That is when it has an excellent spark. The question was why wont it fire when you impluse it

I agree with Mike that the bushings may be worn out. Common problem on the C after 50-60 years. The rotor bushing tube was prone to come loose also on C housings made during the war years when enough good aluminum wasn't available to the housing cast maker. Wico later replaced most of those bad housings with a new one that has a 3 on the side of housing next to the large square cover. Some of them are still out there though and didn't get replaced. If the tube has come loose inside its done and a fix won't stay. If just the bushings worn those are available new and usually need to be reamed to fit the shaft properly.

I'm going to make a WAG to this problem. Those C mags are kinda know for the rotor stem /bushing being broken or worn out so maybe ?? when it is under pressure from the spring it binds the rotor up or it's wiggling goofing up your point gap ??? Worth a double check ?

I havent seed Duane in a while?? Until he gets here, however, if in its normal horizontal position she never catches (dogs come out and engage and turn the coupler) and winds then trips the spring with a good loud sharp SNAP shes never gonna fire at slow cranking speeds. Its normal they can and should fire without any spring wind n trip at higher RPM, cuz the wind n trip automatically stops working then anyway, thats why if a mag dont wind n trip the spring and SNAP its still possible to pull start the tractor !!!! (or she will fire with a good fast spin as you may be doing)

See if in its normally mounted horizontal position the trip dogs extend outward and she winds the spring then she trips that loud sharp SNAP ????? ??? If not it (spring wind n trip coupler assembly) may be clogged or rusted up which a good cleaning and light lube may cure HOWEVER if the springs broke that oviously cant help.

Hope this helps till Duane gets here, but the bottom line is she cant fire at slow cranking speeds unless the trip dogs extend out then the spring winds n trips and she SNAPS. This assumes that Mag is like the other Wico C units used on Tractors which uses the wind n trip assembly, if a mag can spin fast enough it fires regardless, Im unsure of those L engines starting, sorry.

Did you check the impulse spring? It may be broken but still have snap when you turn it over.
