I own a 1978 3130 JD. I began hearing these strange noises {pinging} from the trany-differential area.My tractor has a 6 speed transmisson with hi-low {rabbit-turtle} shift. Is my hi-low shift starting to go? I did hook onto a large tree root while plowing a fence line.I came to a dead stop and then I heard grinding noises from the trany. Could this have caused some damage? Has any one else had this problem?

Which serial number range of the 3130? The late 3130's were much beefed up in the trans to 3140 specs. The early 3130's can be trashed with a few rough moves. The parts section of the Deere web page shows what was updated.

No doubt that bringing the tractor to a full stop while hooked up is definitely hard on gears. You may have broken a tooth off a gear.

I mean if it didn't and now it does..... .sounds like gloom and doom for you too.
