I have a 148 loader with mast mounted two lever control. How can I find out if it is a closed center or open center control vavle?

You need to determined if the tractor you are putting the loader on is open or closed center system.
If it is a Cross valve, it is conversiable. To the left of the spool valves, the open center will have an acorn nut, looks and is adjustable but leave it alone, it is factory set. Closed center will be just a hex nut, non adjustable. On the right there is a large hex plug beside the out port. Nut is 1.5 inch hex. If the valve is closed center there should be C C stamped on the plug. Remove it and there should be an o-ring for external sealing and a machined step to another o-ring groove for sealing another internal port. Make sure that o-ring is good or the closed center valve will act like an open center. Have seen a chop saw modified CC valve installed as an open center. My experience says Greesen valves are shipped either open or closed, non conversible.

Blow compressed air into the inlet hose. If its open center , air should escape thru return port hose. Don't spray yourself with oil in valve....
