I have a JD 2240. My neighbor borrowed the tractor the other day to chop some grass. When he went into heavy grass the PTO drive stopped turning. I talked to the local JD dealership and they told me it probably was the PTO clutch slipping...so to bring it in and they would take care of it. I just wanted to get second opinion prior to hitting the trailer and hauling it down there and opening my check book. There are several leaks also in the hydraulics near around the 3-point connections at the rear end of the tractor. Could this also be a hydraulic line leak problem or pump problem?

Just went through the same thing with a new used tractor. Mine ended up being clutches. Dealer will be able to diagnose with a pressure gauge whether or not pump is up to snuff. If the clutches are shot you should be able to see a bunch of clutch material in the sump screen. I would definitely check the filter and screen to start. Another problem common with this series evidently is an internal leak in a hydraulic line. Do the hydraulics work fine? If they do clutches are the likely culprit. If not you can at least look for leaks at the three point by removing fluid fill cap and pearing in looking for spray of oil ecxessive bubbling in fluid or even a mist of fluid. Someone with a better knowledge of this tractor may be able to explain the pressure test. I ran out of time and the dealer handled splittinjg and clutch replacement. Fairly pricey job.

If the engine speed remains constant and the PTO slows down, it's definitely a slipping PTO clutch. The clutch itself could be worn out and the friction disks could be missing material, or it could be that the pressure applying the clutch is low and is allowing it to slip. Before anything else, they should check the PTO clutch pressure to make sure it's up to specs. If it's low, it's possible that you might (underscore "might") be able to get by with getting the pressure back up to spec, and not have to go into the clutch itself, which isn't likely to be cheap.
