JD 165 Hydro cutting crooked

Greetings. I purchased a 1989 JD 165 Hydro, and after giving it a thorough tune up (obviously previous owner didn"t mantain it right), it"s now running pretty well.

The problem is that when using the mower, the grass is cut on an angle. The height is set to "3" (inches, presumably). I have adjusted the wheels so that they"re juat 1/4" above the ground (as indicated on the label), and checked the deck height on both sides, with the tractor sitting on level ground in the garage.

The grass is stil cut on an angle - the chute side of the deck gets cut much shorter than the opposite side, even though the wheels and deck are level! I"ve tried fudging the level on the non-chute side so that it"s lower than the chute side, but it only marginally helps.

Anyone got any suggestions? Naturally, I have no documentation for the tractor, so it"s somewhat of a voyage of discovery whenever I need to do something (and considering I paid $500 for the tractor, it"s hard to justify the $100+ for the manual).

Thanks in advance,

-Dale

You shouldn't be going by deck height at all, only by actual blade height. I use a socket under the blade for setting that up. If you've got one finger clearance near the discharge chute and two nearer the middle of the deck then the deck needs to be raised on the chute side or lowered on the other side. It can get problematic checking the non-chute side, I use a long dowel to push the socket around and guage the clearence by eye since I can't reach in under the deck that far and use a finger for that from the chute opening.

Dale

I always strat with getting it on a concrete floor, airing up all the tires the same and then get my old body on the floor and measure how far the blade tips are off the flor. That is the true cutting height.

also you did mention that you verifiwed that none of the blades were bent or out of alignment?

Dale, I was going to suggest maybe the labels were incorrectly installed, but you say you measured both sides on level ground. I would measure again several locations on the deck. I would measure the adjusting brackets and make sure it is pulling straight. I would also check tire air pressure. It seems to be something simple. I have a 165 hydro that cuts very well. You can also look on this site and Ebay and find books very cheap. I will try to check mine.
