I am in some desperate need of advice. I am looking at buying a John Deere Model B for my fiancee to restore as a birthday gift. Problem is I know nothing about tractors. (Yes, I am a woman! :) The one I did find says it has a stuck engine. Is that fixable? My fiancee works for RDO Equipment (Direct John Deere Dealer) and is a field service tech; so he knows a lot about fixing tractors. Do you think that he would be able to restore that without a huge headache? Thanks for any advice! Or, if anyone knows of any John Deeres that are from the 1950's or 1960's that are for sale let me know. They don't have to run or have all the parts. Thanks!

I would watch out that you don't pay too much.
How much do they want for it ?What year is it ? That can be a tricky gift to pull off as he may end up spending all his time with the tractor and not with you. Thus leading to you hateing the tractor and him. But if your work shop is at your house that is a good way to keep him at home.

Jenae, you sure know the way to a mans heart!

~On that stuck engine?.. That is a good question.. Once in a while you will get lucky & they will free right up with little money or effort but in a majority of the cases it can be an expensive long process to free & repair it.. If it's frozen up tight & for a long time it could cost way more to make that tractor run again than buying a running one to begin with..

~If it's stuck there could easily be other issues like freeze cracks [very expensive to repair],, rust in the transmission,, frozen up clutch [all expensive to repair]..

~If at all possible either find a tractor expert to take with you to look at that tractor or try to find a running one..

~If that tractor has been sitting outside uncovered for any length of time you should probably assume the worst..
