I have a 1937 John Deere D That needs an Oil seal for the transmision shift lever. the one that was in there was 3 inches away from the shroud on the shaft and desintigrated when i touched it. Deere does not carry this item any more and i was wondering what to use in its place and the best way to install it. any help would be appreciated. thanks John

Greg at the old tractor co has them. I bought one this winter. Went on a little tight tho. No leaks yet. My 35 has a cage attached to cover to control
movement of the seal. Happy days- DG

I got a large brass grommel eye ( liikes like a funnel) at the local fastener specialty store. It slipped over the shaft and I put a couple of o'rings on the shaft forward of this piece to keep it from vibrating toward the gears.

I also put one on the steering shaft at the steering box because I noticed that the rain runs down the shaft and into the box.

I am not familiar with the D under the transmission cover, but I suspect it is similar to the GP with which I am familiar. I use a Chicago Rawhice lip seal on the shift lever shaft. On a GP, the seal is held tight against the rear wall of the transmission by a spring on the shaft. Is the D the same way? If so, the CR seal will work better than the original cork washer.

John, I checked and didn't have anymore of those cork seals or any that size or a used one to size it by. The styled Ds used the same one too and no sub numbers. It was just a cork ring about 3/4" that was impregnated with oil and graphite to fit snug on the shifter lever shaft to keep oil running down shaft and out rear or trans. It doesn't need to fit too tight and bind on shaft but snug and slide. You might find some cork washers that size and glue them together? Try Greg@theoldtractorcompany.com and see if he has any NOS ones too? To put something on there you will need to remove the shifter quadrant on rear of trans, unbolt the shift lever and then slide the shift lever shaft out to get some kind of ring on there. Be sure no one messes with while that is off and make sure it is not stuck in gear before putting cover back on when done.

thanks for the infomation Glen,I am trying to get a hold of Glen to buy one. I was wondering about the cork. Does it stay stationary on the shaft and the cork turns inside the shroud or does it stay tight in the shroud and the shaft slides in the middle of the cork?

John, The cork ring stays snug on the shaft and turns with the shifter shaft. It stays just ahead of the shroud and retainer tin piece on the trans cover. It fits snug on the shaft so oil that is thrown off the chain and gears will just run down the shaft to the cork and then drip back off into trans case. If you notice most Ds seem to lean to the back some and more when in a plow furrow. I suppose a regular oil seal or o-rings would work too but I never done that. I'll email you the numbers and info for Greg if you did get that or figure it out yet. Sounds like D-Geek says he has those yet.

Yep the number D2098R Cork Oil Drip Ring comes up invalid. If I remember right its just a snug fitting cork ring that rides on the shifter shaft against that shroud piece and maybe 3/4" wide. I'll have to look and see if I have any of those tomorrow. Seems like we made one once out of hose or something else? I'm thinking hose would swell too much in oil later still letting it leak. A gasket place can probably cut it out of cork if can't find one. A pump packing ring that fits shaft might work too.
