Yep, that's why its good to have it running some before you put all that new paint on. Roberts and some other places have new valves too. You need the proper gland ends on your fuel lines and new ends and nuts are available too to solder on. I have cleaned the valves with very very fine polishing compound, steel wool, scotch brite pads and polishing paper. Valve or lapping compounds are a bit too harse on the brass and will make things worse. Buffing the inside brass barrel on a steel wire wheel is bad on it too and it will never seal up after that. Sometimes you get lucky and can seal one up but they all seem to eventually leak again. You can take the valve off and plumb it without till you get a good valve ready. Leaving them set plumbed on a small engine gas tank to test works well too.

Why do you think that most of the tractors had them removed in the past ? The leaks drove the owners nuts ! Never had much trouble with the fittings are you using the right ends ? Had trouble with the valve packings, once I do get one sealed up it usually only lasts a few years.I wish someone would make those packings out of somekinda rubber instead of that cork.I have thought about puting an o-ring groove in the valve and trying an o-ring seal.
