Jumping out of high range gears with 3010

I just bought a 3010 gas (1960 model)that was very cheap due to the previous owner saying that the high range synchronizer was out causing all high range gears to not work - it jumps out of gear whenever you try them. Estimate on repair was minimum of $2000.00 from my local JD dealer. The rest of the gears work fine as well as the remainder of the tractor. I'm looking for feedback on this situation - anybody use a tractor like this in its present condition? Also, since buying the tractor, I've heard that possibly only the clutch is out of adjustment. Any feedback on that idea would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I just went through the same problem on my friends 3020 and it would pop out of reverse. Wound up taking just the transmision shaft into John Deere to rebuild and cost $1000.00. Basically replaced everything on the shaft though. I would recommend trying to adjust the linkages as mentioned previously. Then if that don't work bite the bullet and tear it down now before you have to replace all the gears like we did and it will cost alot more money. If you just need the synchros replaced should be under $500 with labor. That is if you spl;it the tractor yourself and take just the shaft in.
Good Luck!

Hey Joe;When i bought my 3010 the linkage was out of adjustment and the snap ring that holds the shift quadrant together was loose causing it to go between gears and such.Like ET says check it out good before resorting to the re-build.Mine has been working good for the last 5-years.Good Luck, Kenny

I would try to ajust the shift linkage to see if it will stay in high range. If that makes it work but it won't stay in low range rebuild the worn out sloppy shift linkage. You can also update the cone type detent to the ball type used in a 4030 and that may hold it in gear better. If ajusting doesn't help then you need to rebuild the top shaft.
