14T baler opinion needed

I have a 1958 14T baler. The question is over the last 47 years, this thing has seen hundreds of thousands of bales. The knotter cams are grooved, the knife rollers have flat spots in them, the knife arms are grooved, the plunger is loose, the bale groovers are really beat up, you guess where I'm going. I put around 700 bales a year through it. Is it worth "rebuilding", or should I just leave it as is? I does a good job. It's not rotten. The engine generally runs great and it's strong. I have heard a lot of old baler repair guys tell me to leave it alone, and I've had some guys tell me to start replacing parts. What do you guys think? I just might give it a good paint job this summer too, starting to fade and rust at the seams.

I agree, if it's still working good keep it greased and dry. If the chaff buildup in the bottom gets wet it will rot all that sheetmetal. Also make sure the spring that works the plunger stop in the bottom of the bale chamber is there and working or you'll eventually bale up the needles. BTDT

Shoot if its working for you just keep it oiled and greased and keep going. It would cost you an arm and a leg to rebuild it. Just make sure the chains are good so it doesn't brake the needles and all. Guess what I'm saying is if it isn't broke don't fix it. I've destoryed 3 of them so far in around 30 years of baleing and now have another to play with as of a month ago.

On the other hand (since you asked for opinions), if you continue to not replace any of these things it will stop working and it will stop working when you are baleing the most beautiful hay you ever made in your life with rain on the horizon. I had a 214 and I was impressed by how ruggedly built it was compared to newer models. It's just slow. If you think it is worth some paint is it not worth some parts? I would start with some new shoes and knives for the plunger. They run so much better with sharp knives that are running nice and close.
