I am restoring my 1949 John Deere B tractor. I have the following questions:

1. What color should the axles for the rear wheels be painted? I like a medium or flat black for contrast, but want it to be authentic in any case.
2. What shade of black should the housings for the lights be? Again, I'm thinking probably medium black (not high gloss) or maybe even flat.
3. What color was the gas cap on the original model? I've seen red on some reproduction models. 4. Where can I purchase the original black seat and back rest?

Thanks.

All that I know is that when we got our 46 B, 49 B, 50 AR, none of them had been repainted and the 51 A, Not sure if repainted or not but don't think so the generators and lights were all green

Some suggest using an automotive clearcoat on the axles after clening them up to prevent rust and keep the new metal look.

The axles were not painted at the factory. Only overspray. Some paint them black and that looks good. Some don't paint them but put clearcoat on to stop rust. Gas caps are mostly painted red. Early unstyled all-fuel had red on small gas tank and green on large dist. tank. Medium black would work on lights and generator. "The Seat man" has an ad in GM with all kinds and colors. (605-432-6192) Says to leave message. Other places sell the cushions, but may not be original.

The black lights and generator didn"t come until the later numbered series.

If you will go back and look in the GREEN MAGAZINE or TWO-CYLINDER magazine at the "original pictures" of the lettered series tractor when they were introduced you will see they all have black lights and generators. Delco sent the (black) generators to Deere and were installed on the tractor AFTER the tractor was painted. The first time green generators appeared on Deere's was in the middle of the production run of the 20 series. The color of the generator was changed to green with the 1958 model 20 series and the dash was changed from green to black (thus the term BLACK DASH) at that time.

Hi CLW -- I am looking for a reasonably authoriative answer to the question -- "What color rims (for the gauges) were used on the lettered series tractors?" Early on (unstyled), I recall the rims being Green. Did they go black when the styled models appeared (beginning with '39), or is it later that we see the balck rims on gauges?

Pat, I read your question when you posted it a few days ago and I just don't know. I have seen all three colors you talked about but would not have a clue to what is correct or when.

Thanks a bunch for coming back to me. Until recent times, I haven't thought much of it. A dear fellow up in San Marcos broached the question, and I took up the task to learn. 'Seems that may take a while. When I do learn. "I'll be back!"

I remember an article in Green magazine or Two cylinder about the assembly line (early numbered series I think)that showed the tractors rolling on steel wheels thru the paint part of the line. I bought a 1946 long hood "A" in Texas recently that came from Kansas. It has the origional 1946 paint on it (except for the breather stack and battery covers) Three of the origional decals are still visible, the big dacal on the left side of the hood, the safety decal on the back of the pan seat and the patent decal just behind the flywheel near the top of the transmission case. All three of the lights are painted with what seems to be black gloss paint but not the cast iron bracket or the part of the light that clamps around the round pin, they are green. --Walt--

Walt, where did you find the battery covers. I'm hemming and hawing about buying a long hood because it's missing the covers. Thanks.

They were on the tractor when I got it but I will ask the person I bought it from, they're a good quality set and fit very well. --Walt--
