Our late model B (1949), fan shaft was leaking oil pretty badly right behind the fan belt pully, we took the whole assembly off at the Gov and rebuilt the internals, when putting the fan gen pully back on we noticed in the book a "rubber packing" in the diagram that would go between the felt seal retainer and pully. doesnt seem to make sense. (there wasn"t one when we dissasembled it) does anyone know if a late model B had one? our book says diagrahm is of a late A and that B were "similar" Any one out there know the answer to this riddle?

Look at the back side of your pulley, inside of the splined area at the end you should have a counter bore for the o-ring to fit into. If for some reason yours doesn't get one that does or have yours machined. Also don't over fill the front bearing with a grease gun.

 ? for Mike M, Standard O-Ring???? in reply to Mike M, 07-03-2005 20:25:43
Sure enough there is a recess for an o-ring on the pully, my question is it a standard o-ring or is it formed to fit the splines on the shaft? seems to me the latter would be required meaning having to order from J.D. as opposed to reaching into our handy dandy o-ring kit.

They are a normal o-ring so you should be able to match one up,even though JD likes to use weird sizes. It seals down farther in past the splines I think next to the bearing when all assembled.
