Try putting a shim between the the PTO stub shaft and the shifter pin, be sure and turn the PTO shaft as you push the stub shaft in, make sure it is engaged before you tighten the bolts up.

I would say with your sometimes sometimes not situation its your pto clutch. Usually when those pins get sheared you have 1000 and thats it, unless it bends then the pin cant come back out to the 1000 postition and then you have nothing.

Jimbo, the "shear" pin that txgrn is refering to is really a shift pin. It's a tiny pin in bottom of trans. case that a rod pushes against to engage 540 rpm drive gear.It can get bent or broken. If broken pto will not operate at 540.Is your pto stub shaft tight as that pushes on actuatting rod? Does pto make any noises? Tx Jim

Only thing I know about it is what a neighbor once told me and that there is a shear pin on a 4010 that isn't on a 4020 and you have to go inside to get at it. It may be partially sheared and catching once in a while.
