I tried to do the comp. test on my H. I first tried on a dry cylinder but i had a hard time getting the gauge to seal. had about 30 psi on both. I sealed the gauge better had 50 psi on both. Added oil went up to 55 psi on pully side stayed the same on flywheel side. Way below the 80 psi my manual calls for. Should i expect to get 80 psi on a hand crank? Im going to find a different addapter to get a better seal.

Hey Jim -- I am still looking for a quality response for you. A number of things come to mind. Per Greg in Ohio, equality of readings from one cylinder to the other is usually more to be desired than a certain reading.

The other issue is -- at what point of degradation in performance from the 80 PSI (when NEW) may one expect starting to be come harder? My first inclination is anything lower than 50/80 would do it, but I am not so sure -- could be even less!

The smoking prtoblem is more likely a result of old rings set into the piston grooves and well surrounded by crystalized carbon. And if that's the case, I doubt any amount of running the tractor will make that problem go away. There may be some "mystery solution" in the marketplace, but I don't know about it if it's there! More later. (PatB)
